As the title suggests, I’m looking into the Husky/Samoyed crossbreed.
Over the last few months, I’ve been seeing loads of adverts for this mix, with puppies being sold at the same prices as KC-registered pedigree dogs. Of course, the photos are always adorable, but puppies always are when they're small, aren't they?
So, I was wondering:
- What do they look like as adults? (If you have any photos, I’d love to see them!)
- What’s their temperament like? (Even though every dog is unique, there must be some common traits.)
- Considering the risks of PRA, corneal dystrophy, and cataracts in Huskies, and hip dysplasia in Samoyeds, what’s the health outlook for these dogs?
The adverts are for puppies sold by 'pros' (well, registered as such on the site, anyway).
If any owners of this crossbreed are on this thread, please feel free to introduce your fur babies!

Hi everyone, I’m the owner of a young Samoyed (75%) Husky (25%) cross. The main reason I went for a crossbreed was that I wasn't looking for a pedigree dog and wanted something a bit hardier. Plus, I’ve always loved mixes! I’m also planning on doing some skijoring with her and thought this cross was a really interesting mix, as well as being gorgeous. Anyway, she’s an absolute star in every way and I’m over the moon with her. We live in the mountains and I really wanted a dog that would be in its element there. At the moment, we’re looking for a male Samoyed to carry on this lovely line, as I’d love to keep one of her puppies to stay with us for the rest of its life. If anyone around the Savoie area has a potential 'boyfriend' to introduce her to, please do get in touch. Here’s a photo for the first post. Have a lovely day!
Absolutely! Even with puppies of the same breed, you can have very different temperaments—even within the same litter. So, with cross-breeds (regardless of the mix), you can’t say for sure that a puppy will turn out a certain way just because you’ve met one individual before. It’s a real gamble and borderline irresponsible, especially when it comes to these kinds of quite specific breed crosses.
You can’t really ‘recommend’ a crossbreed... it’s a bit of a lottery. Yours might have only inherited the best traits from both breeds, but another puppy could end up with all the flaws...
Crosses happen (and every puppy deserves a chance), but it’s not something to be encouraged; you just can’t rely on the outcome in the same way you can with a breed that’s been established for decades!
I have a Husky-Samoyed cross. He has a lovely temperament and is very sociable. He never barks and isn't one to wander off. He looks a bit like a white wolf, though he's slighter than both his parents. He’s very bonded to his owner.
The only drawback is that he can’t stand being alone (this is a very important point to consider. So, if you work all day and can’t arrange dog-sitting, this isn't the dog for you).
It’s the same with exercise—he needs to burn off energy, so two walks a day is a must. Having a garden isn’t enough, and keeping this kind of dog in a flat just doesn't make sense.
He loves kids and other dogs. He gets on fine with cats if he’s properly trained. He has a strong prey drive (mine does, at least).
He’s a very clever dog.
I’d honestly recommend them to anyone who can look after them properly (meaning plenty of space, walks, and having people around).
He’s in perfect health and hasn't had any of the health issues usually associated with his breeds. My dog is 12 now, and everyone thinks he’s only 1 or 2 years old.
Hiya, I'm not sure, it was in my neck of the woods in Poitou-Charentes. I'm looking for the ad; if I find it, I'll post it for you—I was absolutely gobsmacked.
The listing’s gone now; I saw it two days ago. Either she’s had too many messages from people who were outraged, or she’s managed to find a buyer... honestly.
I even saw a breeder on Gumtree with "predominantly white" Border Collie puppies. She was actually claiming they were deaf and, I quote: "deaf dogs understand hand signals perfectly and are much closer to their owners." The woman is trying to talk up the merits of a deaf dog as if it were a specific "breed"—as if having a deaf dog is almost better than any other. It’s just more of these poor pups who could end up falling into the wrong hands... what a joke.
Good grief, is this that nutter who was the subject of a post on the pet forums and several Facebook petitions last year? The one who was intentionally breeding deaf and disabled Borders, claiming they deserved "a chance" too? Wasn't there talk of getting her "business" shut down for animal cruelty? Is she really back at it again on Gumtree?
I even saw a breeder on Gumtree with mostly white Border Collie pups who was claiming they were deaf and—I quote—"deaf dogs understand hand signals perfectly well and are closer to their owners." This woman is trying to talk up the "benefits" of a deaf dog as if it were a "breed", like it’s almost better to have a deaf dog than any other dog... yet more poor little pups that could end up in the wrong hands... it's a joke.
Seriously???
.....
I even saw an ad on Pets4Homes from a breeder with predominantly white Border Collie pups, and she was saying they were deaf—to quote her: "deaf dogs understand hand signals really well and are much closer to their owners". This woman is actually trying to talk up the merits of a deaf dog as if it were a specific "breed", almost as if it’s better to have a deaf dog than any other. Just more of these poor pups who could end up in the wrong hands... what a joke.
