Hi everyone,

I've got a question – I was wondering why dogs sniff people's bums...?

That's basically it, lol... It's a bit of a silly question, but I find myself wondering about it quite often...

I’ve got a question! I have a little friend who doesn't mind at all when someone sniffs her bum and her private parts. Why is that? Cheers!

Dogs sniff bums because it’s their instinct; dogs and cats sniff each other's backsides to recognise one another and pick up scents. Sometimes a dog might sniff a human's bum to alert them that there is a health issue in that area, or that one might be developing. There’s no need to worry, but if it becomes a habit, you should push him away and say a firm “NO”, then ignore him completely for a while (about 25 to 35 minutes). Repeat this action as soon as your pet does it if it happens multiple times a day (10-15 times). DO NOT HIT YOUR DOG WHEN PUSHING HIM AWAY OR HE COULD TURN ON YOU!! Make sure to push him back by the neck area. If you have any other questions about your pet's behaviour, please don't hesitate to ask, I'll be more than happy to answer. Have a lovely evening.

I must admit, the reason I asked is because my next-door neighbour's dog gave my bum a good sniff this morning when she came out of the lift; she just wouldn't leave me alone lol 😳. To be honest, both my neighbour and I were just as embarrassed as each other 😳 but we had a laugh about it. I took it in my stride as she didn't mean any harm. My mother-in-law's dog does it to me as well (though not that often), but for some reason, the male dogs always leave me be.

Yes Jimlolo, of course it's just animal instinct :-) They don't have any 'ulterior motives' ^^ Still, it doesn't change the fact that there are some situations where it’s just so embarrassing (like when your dog dives straight for your mother-in-law's crotch ^^)

Haha, leave a pair of dirty knickers and a clean pair lying around with a pooch, you'll see which one is the bigger hit! ;-)

    Hi,

Well, in my view, there are two reasons that go hand-in-hand:

    1) It’s the part of our body that’s right at nose-level (you’ll notice a Chihuahua is much less likely to sniff a passer-by’s bum), and besides, it’s a part that "sticks out".

    2) It’s a scent-heavy area. Even if we’re perfectly clean, our private parts aren't far away, and just as dogs love sniffing laundry—preferably DIRTY underwear—they head straight for the crotch. ^^

Dogs have no concept of "decorum"! ^^
