Dogs kissing each other

Hi everyone,

I’d love to get your thoughts on something I’m trying to understand.

Basically, my 2-year-old dog and my 4-month-old puppy keep licking each other (their mouths [kisses! *.*], tummies, the inside of their ears, and their 'private parts' ^^).

My husband and I are wondering what this actually means in dog language. Is it just affection?

Thanks in advance :)

The dogs I look after often do it... it’s just affection... And sometimes they even give each other little kisses... tongues and all... it’s so sweet... And they do this at any age, regardless of the animal’s sex.

Yeah, that seems normal to me, it's just mutual affection, it's a good thing =)

Yeah, it’s the same thing, it’s just her maternal instinct. That’s great, you won't have any issues as she grows up. Honestly, don't worry, it's perfectly normal.

They’re both females. The puppy licks the older one more often, but the older one licks her too. So it must be a maternal thing! OK. Thanks :)

Well, since you've got a female dog and the other one's a puppy, it's quite normal. It's just maternal instinct and the pup needing a mum. They'll grow out of it in time, so there's nothing out of the ordinary for now. But as your puppy grows up, you'll need to keep an eye on things because he's a boy, so there's a risk he might try to mount the female. For the time being, though, it's just maternal.
