I've got a 2-year-old English Setter. She had her first season at 13 months, but there's been nothing since then. She was due to have her second season in October, so I'm wondering why that might be. Thanks for any advice!

Just one thing: being in season and infertility are two different things.

A female dog can go into season and still turn out to be infertile; conversely, she might not have a season for a while (which could be due to various factors like health, weight loss, etc.) without necessarily being sterile.

If she’s had them once already then she'll be fine, and yes, it’s up to Mother Nature, lol.

Just be careful when the litter comes and make sure you know exactly what to do, as whelping can be quite difficult for some Setters.

Hi @mahou, you've really put my mind at rest. I was worried Dolly was sterile, but since we’re planning on letting her have a litter in a year or two, we'll just wait for Mother Nature to do her thing. Happy New Year to all you animal lovers!

I’m having the same problem with Eden, who should have come into season back in November and still nothing. I’m not worrying too much for now because a dog’s season can be really variable; it can be every 6 months or even every 13 or 15 months, so there's no need to worry yet, especially as these are only her second seasons. If she’s had them once, it means she’s definitely not sterile anyway. In my case, it’s her third, so it is a bit more odd... but oh well, it’ll happen when it happens.

Hi kan-san, no she isn't pregnant. She lives indoors with me, so I’m keeping a close eye on her. Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, the best thing is to ask your vet lol. Maybe it's because she's pregnant, but it's still a bit early though! ^^

Go and see your vet, they’ll know better than us.
