Do dogs see spirits?

Evening all,

This might sound like a bit of a weird question... lol

Do you think dogs can sense or see spirits?

The reason I'm asking is: my 5-month-old pup sometimes sits back on her haunches and just stares at a spot in the house, or at the ceiling... She stays completely still and goes quite stiff... for a few seconds?

Anyway, there's my "away with the fairies" question lol! Have a good evening

Evening, I’ve got a Belgian Malinois, and at night he seems to see strange things because he gets really aggressive, just like he would in broad daylight if he’d spotted a stranger. I often find myself wondering if he’s seeing some kind of weird phenomena.

Look for the mouse behind the plasterboard.

Hi, Harley's showing the same behaviour as described earlier – staring down the hallway, then coming back and forth to me. He's been doing it for a while now; I think he's hearing noises I can't? Maybe because it's so windy today? As for spirits, I couldn't say? But he's really worrying me. Is it just the wind? I have to say, it's creeping me out a bit.

Hello... Last night we filmed my son’s Chihuahua... She sits on the arm of the sofa and stares at a spot on the wall, looking terrified and following it with her eyes... and at one point she starts sniffing the air in front of her as if there were something or someone there... She’s barking softly and growling... and when she’s on the floor, she creeps towards that spot but won’t get near it and runs away frightened... She starts shivering and when we call her—even though she usually reacts instantly to her name—it takes a couple of goes to get her attention... she turns to us but then goes straight back to the wall...

Hi everyone, Last night, we filmed my son’s Chihuahua. She puts her front paws on the arm of the sofa and stares at a spot on the wall, barking softly and growling... then she starts sniffing as if someone or something is right there in front of her... When we put her on the floor, she creeps towards the spot but won’t actually get close to it... It’s really spooky; she’s been doing it regularly for weeks now...

Hi everyone, I certainly caused a bit of a stir with my post... whether you believe in spirits or not is one thing, but it’s true that dogs pick up on so many things we’re completely oblivious to. When I see her just rooted to the spot for a few seconds, staring at a specific point... it’s a bit creepy to see! 😯 lol!!! You can easily get yourself all worked up if you think about it too much :)

I think the brain is capable of so much, and it’s really easy to get yourself all worked up. It’s like a Ouija board; we’re the ones moving it without even realising. You end up getting so scared that you start going a bit mad. I’m not saying that sort of thing doesn't exist, but I believe in science more (I’m currently doing my science A-levels).

Why should spirits float, Humeur de Chien?

    Why not?

That’s pretty much how we imagine spirits, isn't it? Immaterial beings, ghosts, spectral or ethereal forms, if you like.

Personally, I prefer to think that we find it hard to imagine what all the scents drifting through the air represent to a dog.

Their world is primarily olfactory, whereas our perception of the outside world is mainly visual. So, I reckon it’s not at all impossible that their sense of smell leads them to perceive things that we miss, and that this can sometimes cause them to behave strangely since it’s beyond our sight.

And if it’s not their sense of smell, why not their hearing, which is much better than ours for picking up high frequencies?

Mind you, I’m not denying that some things are beyond us and for which we’d likely struggle to provide a rational explanation. However, a lack of explanation shouldn’t necessarily lead us straight to the paranormal.

Why should spirits have to float, Humeur de Chien? Lol!... they can get around normally without needing to float through the air. :-) The only ones I see floating are in the films! Personally, I reckon they’re real, having already experienced some really bizarre things. And the cats at home always act quite strangely whenever these things happen. That’s my take on it!

Before wondering if dogs can see spirits, we’d first have to prove that spirits actually exist and are floating about amongst us. And that’s quite a tall order in itself...
