Concerns about post-spay incision

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate your advice. I had my girl spayed on the 26th of February. Just to let you know, I’m a really anxious person anyway and her incision is worrying me to no end. I’ve noticed some redness and a large 'lump', but there doesn't seem to be any sign of infection or any smell... Do you think I need to worry and go straight to the vet, or should I wait until the 5th of March to have her stitches removed and get her checked over then? I've attached a couple of photos. Thank you so, so much in advance!!

Hi there, post-spay stitches are usually kept in for about 10 to 15 days. Your dog would normally have been given some anti-inflammatories for the five days following the operation, which should have managed the pain, but it's quite common to see some slight inflammation around the incision. In this case, the inflammation shows up as a small bulge. That’s most likely what you’re seeing here. Your dog could perhaps have kept her dressing on for a little longer, but personally, I think the wound looks excellent. It’s a very neat job and the swelling is only minor. I don’t think you have anything to worry about, so you can just wait for your follow-up appointment to have the stitches removed. You just need to make sure she keeps her cone on until then and try to keep her activity levels down. Hope that puts your mind at rest. Best wishes, Zachary. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart—I really appreciate your reply! Have a lovely day!!

    Hi there,

Post-spay stitches are usually kept in for about 10 to 15 days. Your dog should have been given anti-inflammatories for the five days following her surgery, which should have managed the pain, but it’s perfectly normal for there to be some slight inflammation around the wound. In these cases, inflammation shows up as a small bump or a bit of swelling, which is most likely what you’re seeing here.

She might have been able to keep her dressing on for a little while longer, but personally, I think the wound looks great. The stitching is very neat and the swelling is minimal. In my opinion, you’ve got nothing to worry about, and you can wait for your follow-up appointment to have the stitches taken out. Just make sure she keeps her cone on until then, and try to ensure she doesn't overdo it with any heavy exercise.

Hope this helps put your mind at rest,

    Best regards,

    Zachary.

Hi, The scar looks good. Okla had a lump as well. It was a fluid pocket that had formed due to inflammation because she was tearing about all over the place... I had to try and stop her from going too wild. It cleared up on its own in the end, but it did take a few weeks.

I think Tosca had a small lump as well, but it cleared up on its own. The scar looks like it’s healing really well, but if you’re at all unsure, just give the vet a quick ring – it’s all part of the post-op follow-up.

I couldn't really say, as Génésys had a bandage on for a fortnight, and once it was removed, it all looked great. If you're in any doubt though, send a photo to the vet.

At my vet's, the post-spay follow-ups are free and it’s easy to get a quick appointment. If you're in any doubt, why not pop in and let the vet have a look? The scar looks nice and neat, and I can see the slight bump you’re talking about. I’m not sure if it’s just normal (it’s logical that the area would be a bit inflamed) or if it’s hiding some haematomas. Don’t worry though, my girl had those when she was spayed; it’s nothing serious, just a bit of a pain as it means strict rest, or it could be something else entirely.

You’re a month out with your dates, aren’t you? 😉

The scar looks really good to me.

As long as there’s no weeping or a large soft lump forming, there’s no need to worry.
