Hi everyone!

I have a simple question for you: can a minor be the legal owner of a dog?

Thanks in advance

My sentences are clearly perfectly understandable since people manage to reply to me without asking me to rephrase anything...

True enough; but it’s sometimes a bit of a struggle to decode (I’m not just saying that to you, but in general, because on top of the spelling mistakes, some people use the wrong words, or make words up, or miss words out, or write sentences that make no sense at all...) and it becomes impossible to understand, and therefore to reply, even when you really want to help because you can see it’s a genuine plea for help; but you just can't because the post is unreadable... :(

@Nhawak, what you’re saying is absolutely right, but with the nuance that the dog is transferred from one owner to another through a bill of sale (breeder/buyer). In that case, a dog can only be sold to a minor with parental consent.

If there is no commercial transaction, the owner’s age doesn’t need to be checked and isn’t important. The simple fact of putting the pet health record or the microchip registration in a minor's name effectively makes them the owner.

Hello. Legally, a dog is considered property, and there is nothing to stop a minor from buying one and having it registered in their name. However, an exception exists for dogs classified as dangerous breeds.

    So, there we go :p

I’ve no idea why they’re excluded though; I’ve only just found that out while checking the age limit..

Unless I'm mistaken, a dog (except for those in Group 7 (gundogs) which are unrestricted) can be owned by a 16-year-old—no younger—as long as their parents agree. Otherwise, it’s illegal. Personally, I had my dogs registered in my mum's name until I was 18 because of all the red tape, but I can't quite remember the exact reason... It might have been for the pet insurance. I can't remember now.

(PS: Just so you know, I don’t mind making spelling mistakes. Feel free to ignore my posts or not reply if it bothers you.)

Yeah, well, if it means being misunderstood because it’s unreadable, it might be worth making a bit of an effort. We can’t exactly reply to something we don't understand simply because there are so many mistakes that the sentence has lost its meaning. If you keep making as many mistakes as possible just for the sake of it, you shouldn’t be surprised if some people get a bit wound up (even if typos can happen to anyone, especially when you're in a hurry :p). And besides... it’s just common courtesy for the people who have to try and decipher sentences that might actually mean something... 🙄

"Anyway, that’s just my take on it" 😁)

I’m perfectly calm, don’t you worry! You’re simply refusing to admit a plain fact. None of your arguments hold water, @lili-75. "In some situations it might cause issues and I’m not sure it’s legal" = well, it is legal. "If travelling, the dog could be turned away" = and why would that be? To travel, a dog needs a pet passport for its health and vaccination records; it has nothing to do with the owner’s status. "In cases of abandonment or if the dog bites" = the dog belongs to its owner and the responsibilities lie with them. If the owner is a minor, civil or criminal liability falls on the responsible adult or legal guardian—in this case, their parent. So, when I talk about the responsibility I was given, I mean moral responsibility—meaning it was my duty to respect and properly look after my dog’s life.

Why lili-75 "on the other hand 10 years old seems a bit wierd and risk to me" (I’m quoting you, including the mistakes!), why that comment!!?!!

I don’t really see what you’re getting at and, frankly, yes, I had my first dog in my name when I was 10. It was a matter of upbringing and responsibility: it was clear to my parents that given my passion and how much I wanted a dog, they were using this to mark my responsibility for the animal. I had to take care of everything (food, training, walks, hygiene, vet bills and grooming since she was a little Bichon). At that age, I wasn’t asking for toys for Christmas or birthdays anymore, so I’d get money to spend on my dog, and I certainly needed it (and had to work hard to earn it too!) because she was often poorly.

So yes, it is possible, whether you like it or not...

I'm not sure which category my dog falls into, he's a Chihuahua Jack Russell cross. I'll be 16 on 22nd November, so will I be able to put my name on his microchip details and vaccination record then?

Yes, unless it’s a banned or restricted breed. I got my first dog when I was 10.
