Hi everyone!

I have a simple question for you: can a minor be the legal owner of a dog?

Thanks in advance

Hi Dogicorne, Sorry, but the answer is no. No rescue centre will rehome a dog to you, no breeder will sell you a puppy, and no private owner with even a bit of common sense will give you an animal without your parents' consent and presence. If they don't want a dog, you simply have to accept their decision. Especially since, legally, they would be the ones responsible for any dog living in their home. Being a secondary school student, you won't be able to look after a dog properly, whether that’s financially (kit, food, vet bills...) or simply having enough time for training and walks.

Hi, I’m under 18 and I really want a dog but my parents aren't on board. Am I actually allowed to adopt a dog if I'm a minor and without my parents' permission?

Evening, I have a question. I'm 15 and I'd like to know if it’s still possible to be a dog owner. Thanks for your replies 😊

Nhawak, what you're saying is spot on, but with the caveat that the dog is transferred from one owner to another via a bill of sale (breeder/buyer). In that case, a dog can only be sold to a minor with parental consent. If there is no commercial transaction, the owner's age doesn't need to be checked and isn't important. Simply putting the pet's health record or microchip registration in a minor's name makes them the owner.

You’re right, thanks for correcting me!

I thought that rule applied to being an owner in general, but you're right, it's only the case if there’s an actual bill of sale :)

I think a minor can own a dog, as long as it isn't an attack dog.

Also, pets are officially recognised as 'sentient beings'.

In fact, since 28th January 2015, they have been recognised as sentient beings, so cases of animal cruelty are now punishable under both criminal and civil law.

And it’s about time, too! 🙄

    Hi there.

Legally, a dog is considered property, and there is nothing stopping a minor from buying property and registering it in their name. However, there is an exception for breeds restricted under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

I thought dogs weren't classed as objects anymore, were they?

In fact, they have been recognised as sentient beings since January 2015, so animal cruelty is now a punishable offence in both criminal and civil courts.

    Hello everyone,

If you’re looking to ask questions regularly or learn more about animals, I’d like to invite you to check out the Facebook page for Animal Community France; the website is set to launch on 15th November.

The articles will be written in part by pet professionals, including a dog trainer, an animal osteopath, and a vet. We’ll be covering mainly dogs, cats, horses, and small furries, but many others too.

Animal Community is also a crowdfunding platform dedicated to supporting animal rescue charities. I am a partner of the national animal welfare federation.

    Best wishes,

    Sophie

As you can imagine, I don't make mistakes on purpose, but I'm sorry, I don't get this obsession some people have with pointing it out if it isn't just pure spite. You don't know me; maybe for me, writing like this is a real achievement even with the spelling mistakes, maybe I'm doing my absolute best here, etc.

If that were the case, instead of just brushing people off and saying you didn't care, you would have explained and maybe even apologised -_-; maybe you are doing your best, that's true... or maybe you just couldn't care less; we can't know, since as you said we don't know you, and your "it doesn't bother me" attitude suggested the latter...

Otherwise, please don't think I'm being nasty, I'm not criticising the spelling... as long as someone is actually making an effort and doesn't snap at people about it either.

Like I said, it can happen to anyone, especially when you're in a rush; personally, if I were making four mistakes every three words, I wouldn't be rude to people, even if I was called out on it regularly, because I’d remember that on a forum, the person doesn’t know me and can't know I have difficulties... These things happen, and if that's the case with you, I didn't mean to offend you; but your attitude suggested otherwise, and that’s what made me want to point out that when you want to communicate in writing, if you have the means to do it properly, making an effort is the bare minimum of respect for others...

So, if your mistakes are down to laziness, I still think you could apologise for being so dismissive, as it is a lack of respect (especially since, if it's just down to not paying attention, you can always see the word is underlined in red and right-click it – it's hardly much trouble).

If your mistakes are due to genuine difficulties, then I sincerely and with no ill will wish you the best of luck, because it's a difficult situation, even debilitating, as it limits communication and some people even end up unemployed because of it (I've seen it happen :s), and I know it's hard having to work on that when you've got other things to do and lack the resources.

But the education system isn't the point, so I suggest we leave it there. You can just pick from my "multiple-choice options" depending on which case applies to you :p

But please know that whatever the case may be, there’s no malice intended in what I’ve said.

...And sorry if I’ve made any mistakes ;)
