Boubou has eaten sanitary towels...

Hi everyone!

I'm back on the forum to share today's disaster.

The title says it all: my little monster has eaten a sanitary towel, plastic wrapper and all.

As soon as I realised, I called the vet. We've got an appointment in 2 hours for an examination and an ultrasound.

Given the size of the thing compared to my girl, and what it's made of, the vet surgery doesn't recommend waiting for it to pass like other small items might, and they want to examine her before advising on what to do.

So here I am, worried sick, just waiting for the appointment time to roll around. It happened during the night, so it's too late to induce vomiting. I'm not really sure what's going to happen next.

As for how on earth she got her paws on the pad, let's just say my sister will definitely be sleeping out on the porch tonight.

I'd be grateful for any info on pets swallowing similar objects, especially if you've got any reassuring stories!

So, the verdict from the vet is in: no pancreatitis.

Calcium/Phosphorous levels aren't critical yet, but they are quite low.

To give you an update on the latest, Minnie has lumps and bumps all over (every time I stroke her, I seem to find a new one) and she's shaking her head.

Her ears are indeed a bit inflamed.

The vet thinks that the constant inflammation in her gut is playing havoc with her immune system, and as a result, her body is having "random" inflammatory reactions as a form of protest.

She reckons there’s a definite issue with bowel inflammation, triggered by her swallowing that towel. However, the inflammation might have started and persisted for a different reason, and this major flare-up could have been set off by something else entirely.

So, we’ve got an appointment on Friday for an endoscopy, and they’re going to run some other tests at the same time. We’re going to look into local causes (digestive system diseases) as well as immune system disorders. We’d already had a check done on that, so this will be a more in-depth search for rarer conditions (a path they aren’t entirely convinced by, but we’re at the stage now where we have to start looking at the less likely possibilities).

On Friday, she’s having an upper GI scope and, if there’s time, a lower one too. But if they run out of time (it can happen with small dogs that their body temperature drops too quickly, meaning they can’t be under anaesthesia for too long), we’ll wait for the results of the upper scope before deciding whether to go ahead with the lower one.

She’s been a bit under the weather today, really quite lethargic. If she hadn’t developed all these new symptoms, I might have had second thoughts about putting her through this procedure, but to be honest, I’m not really questioning it now.

I’m relieved it’s not pancreatitis; everything I’d read about it was really frightening. But now we’re back to a massive range of possibilities... We should have the first results back in about two weeks, and I’m hoping I’ll have some more answers then!

The whole thing is still a bit weird, isn't it?

Do specialist allergy vets actually exist?

And now tonight she’s come out in red bumps all over her body. We've got an appointment with our vet late tomorrow afternoon. I’m starting to get really desperate...

White fish is really easy on the stomach.

I’m not sure if we’ve mentioned probiotics to help restore her gut flora?

Yeah, the probiotics... we’ve spent about £70 on them so far. She’s been on them for two months now and she absolutely loves the taste, but that’s pretty much the only effect they’ve had.

I’m probably being a bit cynical, I’m sorry, and for all I know it might’ve been even worse without them, but at the moment it feels like I’ve just been throwing money down the drain!

As for the white fish, we’ll see; if things don't settle, I'll look into it. Since we haven't introduced it yet, I’ll have a think about it tomorrow when the next lot of results comes in! Thanks for the suggestion, I had no idea it was particularly easy to digest!
