Boubou has eaten sanitary towels...

Hi everyone!

I'm back on the forum to share today's disaster.

The title says it all: my little monster has eaten a sanitary towel, plastic wrapper and all.

As soon as I realised, I called the vet. We've got an appointment in 2 hours for an examination and an ultrasound.

Given the size of the thing compared to my girl, and what it's made of, the vet surgery doesn't recommend waiting for it to pass like other small items might, and they want to examine her before advising on what to do.

So here I am, worried sick, just waiting for the appointment time to roll around. It happened during the night, so it's too late to induce vomiting. I'm not really sure what's going to happen next.

As for how on earth she got her paws on the pad, let's just say my sister will definitely be sleeping out on the porch tonight.

I'd be grateful for any info on pets swallowing similar objects, especially if you've got any reassuring stories!

I was already meant to be calling the vet about something else, so I’ll ask them about that hemp oil. Thanks for the tip! :)

I’ll have to see when I can apply it, as I have to manually disinfect each spot three times a day. I’m not sure if I can put the oil on straight away afterwards, or if I should slot it in between the cleanings!

Thanks for all the positive vibes, I’m sure it’s helping us! :)

(I haven't bumped the threads about Oxane, as I assumed everything was going well based on the last update – is that still the case?)

Poor little girl, 😞 sending huge cuddles to Minnie.

Sending lots of positive vibes so the tests provide some answers.

She needs to keep fighting, your lovely little poppet.

(For Oxane’s spots, an organic hemp oil applied by hand really helped her dreadful itching... worth asking the vet if it’s okay to use on Minnie?)

Perhaps she’s just got a delicate constitution? But even a puppy from a breeder can have fragile health...

Big kisses and lots of cuddles,

    Speak soon

But we’d have fewer cuddles to give, because as you know, Moumouth is always "smitten" the second we spot a "chi". He doesn't have eyes for anything else! With him, it’s just like with people—opposites attract!

Oh goodness, don’t even go there, Misanthrope, it’s bringing tears to my eyes! (I’m honestly at the end of my tether; I was crying with stress in the vet’s waiting room yesterday just at the thought of the word "pancreatitis", even though I pinky swear I’ve hardly looked anything up on Google.)

It’s definitely down to bad luck as well, and even your gorgeous Moumouth—mummy’s little darling—who, if I’ve understood correctly, comes from an incredibly reputable breeder, could have just drawn the short straw!

It was more of a passing thought really, because I’ll tell you this: if I’d known I’d have all these issues with Minnie when I adopted her, I’d have taken her just the same. There’s far too much love and happiness for it to change a thing! Sometimes when I’m feeling a bit low, I just think of her sweet little face and everything feels better. On Sunday I had to explain to some mates that no, I didn't have time to watch TV: "But what do you do with your spare time?" Well... how do I put it? I spend 90% of my time just staring at Minnie! 😳

Mind you, if I had your Moumouth here, I’d be in a proper pickle: I’m not sure I’d ever be able to tear myself away from him (and Minnie would be very cross)! 😁

You know, Moumouth comes from the most reputable breeder there is; his pedigree is faultless. Last Saturday (I don’t do shows anymore as I don’t want to stress him out), his brother actually won the world champion title, and yet health-wise, he’s so fragile! He’s the apple of my eye and I do everything I can to keep him well, but there’s always something! It just goes to show, you’ve got the ‘little ‘un’ and I’ve got the ‘big ‘un’, but we’re both in the same boat! You’ll have Minnie for much longer than I’ll have Moumouth! When that day comes, I’ll be closing my account and my life along with it!

Thanks for the encouragement, it’s really appreciated! We’ve had one thing after another lately, and between Minnie and everything else, it’s all starting to get a bit much...

Poor Minnie hasn't been herself at all since yesterday, and these spots are driving her round the bend.

You're right, Docline, I don't think we'll get anywhere without a diagnosis of the root cause. I'm really hoping this test (which is costing a small fortune!) will give us some answers.

And Misanthrope, according to the vet, it’s not really about the towel itself anymore; for her, even some meat "contaminated" with something that wouldn't normally bother another dog would have triggered the same thing.

I'm trying to look at it that way at least, because I’m feeling so guilty about the whole thing. It’s hard not to keep going over all the "what-ifs" that might have prevented us from being in this situation!

The vet mentioned that she must be quite fragile and might have a genetic condition, likely because Minnie was an "accident" from a private seller. So, we've got the result of little Chihuahuas bred without any genetic or health tests or anything, and it’s possible it’s resulted in a little fennec with some dodgy genetics and fragile health.

I’m feeling just as gutted as you! Try to keep your chin up for your little girl (easier said than done, I know). Sending you lots of love and give Minnie plenty of cuddles from me! I knew that swallowing a foreign object that doesn’t pass through could really mess up a dog’s system, but I didn’t realise it could be to this extent!!!!

Poor little thing, what an ordeal! I hope they finally get to the bottom of the root cause, which would be a massive step towards sorting out this string of problems.

Right, a bit of a mixed bag then...

Sending heaps of strength to you and your sweet little fennec while you wait for the results of the scope.
