Boubou has eaten sanitary towels...

Hi everyone!

I'm back on the forum to share today's disaster.

The title says it all: my little monster has eaten a sanitary towel, plastic wrapper and all.

As soon as I realised, I called the vet. We've got an appointment in 2 hours for an examination and an ultrasound.

Given the size of the thing compared to my girl, and what it's made of, the vet surgery doesn't recommend waiting for it to pass like other small items might, and they want to examine her before advising on what to do.

So here I am, worried sick, just waiting for the appointment time to roll around. It happened during the night, so it's too late to induce vomiting. I'm not really sure what's going to happen next.

As for how on earth she got her paws on the pad, let's just say my sister will definitely be sleeping out on the porch tonight.

I'd be grateful for any info on pets swallowing similar objects, especially if you've got any reassuring stories!

Yes Tania, anyway, there’s nothing else for it but to wait and see how things turn out, but once again, I’m absolutely sure it’ll be fine! :) And Doudou, yes, it’s quite a lot, but things are looking better, and besides, nearly a pound drops off quickly when you’re a poorly little thing! So sorry about Oxane, I suppose the girl doesn’t want to let you enjoy her company in peace; she wants as much fuss as possible! 😁

She’s filling out again, which is a really good sign...

14oz is a lot for your little feather...

Ah! Oxane's diary is a bit like that... (no photos, just notes in her logbook)

    I check her poo regularly...

On her birthday on the 10th, Oxane had an allergic flare-up with some spots filled with pus...

I’ve no idea why, though?!! The spots have already scabbed over... That’s the big question. Who? What? Or did she eat something outside?

She isn't scratching at all like she was in those first few months...

    The allergy has calmed down...

But it’s still lingering... or just under the skin...

Otherwise, she’s in great shape—plenty of curves too! At 2 stone 7 lbs (16.2kg) for 4 months old, that's a good weight for a female Lab...

I’m rubbish at trying to work out her adult weight...

You know, I know a dog that only gets on well with RC... Mind you, we're all different, and pets are too.

    🙂

    Spot on! You're absolutely right.

And as for me, my only wish right now is to stop the "poo diary", which has nearly three months' worth of photos of Minnie's business and her meals recorded—I'm absolutely fed up with it! 👎

She’s lost about 0.9 lbs, which is 10% of her weight, but she’s doing okay and is slowly filling out again. I haven’t seen any updates on your little Oxane’s thread, so I assume she’s back on her feet and is a total rocket again?

Poor little girl, you're right, the main thing is that she gets her strength back!!

    Has she lost much weight?

@Doudou, yeah, we’ll see if that’s possible later on. I have to admit, with the nightmare the vet is describing, "hypoallergenic BARF" might be a bit too much for me to take on right now!

We’ll see once she’s recovered; for the moment, the goal is just to get her better, and fast. I’m away in a month for three weeks, and I want her to be in good shape for her "holidays" at her "grandparents'". Since I’ll be out of reach and on the other side of the world, she’d better be doing well if I’m going to be able to leave!

Apparently, lentils are particularly allergenic (if I remember rightly) and hard to digest for an already sensitive stomach. Since you can't be sure what form they're in when they're in dry food, the vet prefers to avoid them.

As for beetroot, I can't quite remember—I'm worried about saying something silly—but I think she mentioned heart issues (it was a 90-minute appointment with so much info, it’s hard for my poor brain to remember everything).

And yes, further down the line we’ll move onto something other than Pro Plan, but for her recovery, the vet wants dry food that is:

    - fresh meat-free

    - 30% protein

    - with as few ingredients as possible

    - no traces of meat (as opposed to fish, I’m not sure how you say it 😳)

    - no lentils and no beetroot

So, for now, Pro Plan is perfect for what we’re looking for in her current diet; it’s obviously not for the long term! :) Think of it as the equivalent of hospital food for humans! ;)

Regarding the lentils, is it possible to get the vet's explanation? Maybe because of flatulence? I can't think of any other issue?! On the whole, lentils are great for a dog's health in their diet, as long as they're well-cooked so they can digest them... ...they're a brilliant source of zinc... and they're really good for boosting energy levels during recovery... Beetroot for the sugar... But in dry food, the amount needs to be moderate... Orijen Six Fish seems better on paper than the Pro Plan Veterinary diet?

Cheers Be Cool (I can’t imagine how long that took you, I’m putting together a comparison in Excel myself, I’ve been at it all morning!)

Right, for the time being let’s forget about chicken – let’s just assume it’s all over between us! ;)

It’s funny, the Purizon ingredients really remind me of the Salmon & Veg from Millies Wolfheart (I think it’s Tania who uses that brand, I just looked them up on a whim, but they actually look like decent stuff). EDIT (Purizon does have a slightly higher protein content in the analytical constituents though)

Even if there are "a lot of ingredients," it still ticks the vet’s boxes. I’m going to compare what she’s currently recommending with the Purizon and Millies Wolfheart to show the vet next week. (Anyway, actually working at work is overrated; dry food spreadsheets are way more important! 👌 )
