Boubou has eaten sanitary towels...

Hi everyone!

I'm back on the forum to share today's disaster.

The title says it all: my little monster has eaten a sanitary towel, plastic wrapper and all.

As soon as I realised, I called the vet. We've got an appointment in 2 hours for an examination and an ultrasound.

Given the size of the thing compared to my girl, and what it's made of, the vet surgery doesn't recommend waiting for it to pass like other small items might, and they want to examine her before advising on what to do.

So here I am, worried sick, just waiting for the appointment time to roll around. It happened during the night, so it's too late to induce vomiting. I'm not really sure what's going to happen next.

As for how on earth she got her paws on the pad, let's just say my sister will definitely be sleeping out on the porch tonight.

I'd be grateful for any info on pets swallowing similar objects, especially if you've got any reassuring stories!

I've just seen this thread pop up again! I'm reading through... you're definitely right to go back to the vet, so keep us updated. Hang in there, I'm sure it's nothing too serious (fingers crossed). ...and get some work done lol👋

Yep, I've got a poo sample in a bag, inside a Tupperware, in the fridge. I wasn't really sure where else to put it while waiting for the vet.

As for the photo, we'll see, but you can't really make much out.

And yeah, I know I shouldn't get ahead of myself, but it's easier said than done! I've been replaying the last few days over and over in my head, trying to see if there's anything I might have missed.

I'm just like you, I start overthinking every little detail. We'll see what the vet thinks. I'm at the office but honestly, I'm absolutely useless right now...

Don't drive yourself too mad! The more you watch them, the more you'll start spotting "bits" that don't look right! I get myself into a right state over every little niggle! The appointment isn't far off now! Don't forget to take a "poo sample" with you, it'll make their job much easier! And a photo before you pick it up too! It sounds daft but it’s important since that’s the main issue!

Get another scan done just for peace of mind! Otherwise, you won't get a wink of sleep!

Yes, we’ve got that planned for our appointment. The practice is really good, and I don't think they'll miss a thing; they'll do all the necessary tests so that both Minnie and I can leave feeling reassured and back on track. (I must admit, they’re brilliant at handling my little panics over Minnie; even when I’m being silly, they take the time to explain everything properly and explore every possibility).

Maybe it’s completely unrelated... I don't know. I usually have some idea of what's going on, but this time I’m totally stumped.

I’ve also got a feeling her back left leg isn't quite right. Her back end slipped on the wooden floor again this morning and she ended up on her back.

Anyway, she’s sneezing now and it’s making me panic. I need to stop coming up with theories and just wait patiently for our vet appointment. (Easier said than done!)

Yes Doudou, I’ll have a look! But first, I want to be sure that their "clinical condition", if I can put it that way, isn't anything to worry about. Between the yellow colour, the mucus, and then that watery stuff afterwards, I’m not reassured at all. And it’s happening quite a long time after they’ve eaten, too. So before trying anything, I need a vet to confirm it’s nothing (I’m going to assume everything will be just fine). I’ll look into a natural remedy after that!

Sanitary towels have that plastic film, like a thin plastic lining between the layers.

Maybe that's the bit that isn't breaking down?

If you have the time, try heading over to the BARF forum...

to have a chat with the admin, Ruju...

There might be a clay-based remedy, but I’d want to be certain.

Maybe psyllium husk or Diatomaceous earth...

You're right to take them for a quick check-up.

It'll put your mind at rest 😉

She’s still scoffing her food like a little pig; that’s the one thing that hasn’t changed!

She isn’t acting lethargic either, which is why I didn’t panic, but she’s had diarrhoea again this morning – enough is enough!

I’m happy to give her tummy some time to settle, but I’m starting to think there must be something else going on for it to last this long... Or maybe she hasn’t actually passed everything yet and it’s starting to take its toll...

I just don’t know. It’s the consistency and the colour of her poo that’s bothering me. It wasn’t even like this back when she swallowed the towel!

Oh sugar... or should I say s**t! So sorry about Minnie. Is she eating alright? Darn!! The vet is definitely the best shout rather than being left wondering. 😔 See you tonight. Gentle fusses for your little girl.
