Blood in my puppy's poo

Hi everyone,

My 3-month-old puppy has some blood in her stools, just a tiny drop. Her poo is quite soft but she doesn't actually have diarrhoea. I went to the vet, and they just prescribed some Smecta and something to help regulate her gut flora (I'm not sure if that’s the right way to put it).

But I'm really worried!!!

What should I do??

I've actually just wormed her, but it seems she doesn't have worms...

Right, I'll check the ingredients list straight away!

    Thanks so much

These sorts of issues often come down to food, in my opinion. It could be something the dog has pinched or sometimes worms if the dog is really sensitive (that was the case with mine; I've had two dogs with worms—one had a really bad stomach ache and you couldn't see a thing, and my boy, as soon as he caught them, he ended up with bloody diarrhoea...).

When it comes to dry food, you need to check the ingredients... The first thing listed is what there's most of in the kibble. Since dogs are carnivores, the first ingredient should be meat; if not, there's a problem right there. Personally, I steer clear of anything listed as "meat meal". People usually recommend lean meats (like chicken or fish, and avoiding things like wild boar or beef) for dogs who are prone to stomach issues, as they're easier to digest. And generally speaking, grain-free food is more suitable anyway. So, have a look at your bag, check the ingredients and see. Just the first ingredient will give you an idea, then you need to look at the details.

That said, a raw diet is a better choice overall, but it’s not always the easiest thing to get started with...

    Thanks!

How can I tell if it's his dry food that doesn't agree with him?

Just stay calm... no matter what. Keep an eye on his poo, head back to the vet if things get any worse, and check if his food is actually right for him. If his food doesn't suit him, wait until he's feeling a bit better before switching it, so you aren't putting him through a big change when he's already poorly. My dog had bloody diarrhoea... he was literally just passing blood... You can imagine the panic, but you really have to stay calm—stressing him out won't help matters.
