Hi everyone, I’m getting a hedgehog soon and I wanted to know if it might be dangerous for my dog because of the spines.

    Hi there,

Just a heads-up though, hedgehogs carry diseases that can be passed on to dogs. They have loads of fleas, and I've found some in my garden that were absolutely riddled with ticks.

Hedgehogs and skunks, I think, but only if they’re from a breeder.

    Pet skunks???!!!!!??? 🤪

Blimey, that can’t be easy to live with day-to-day! 🤭

I saw a programme where a woman lived with two skunks and other animals. She said they’re very clean, they use a litter tray, etc... Mind you, Chocolat Café, I don’t have any answers for you...

    Blimey, I bet that’s quite a handful! 🤭

That's the case in France, yes, but there are breeders in Canada.

    Hi all,

From what I’ve gathered, hedgehogs are a protected species in France. You need special authorisation to keep or rescue them, which involves obtaining an official permit from the local authorities.

    Hi there! 🙂

Well, Erable is saying the same as me (I must admit, I found that out on a pet forum post where someone had a pet hedgehog; just like you, I was outraged, but she lived in Canada, which is why it's legal to keep them, much to the poor little things' despair).

Spot on, Tania! Hi there, by the way 👌

No, it's impossible to release these little hedgehogs into the wild!

They are captive-bred (often by small-scale hobby breeders). Especially since the one that is legal and recognised in Quebec is the African pygmy hedgehog.

For anyone who gets a hedgehog (which will set you back about £90 to £100, by the way), these little critters live in the same conditions as other exotic pets (hamsters, gerbils and all those other small furries!!!), meaning a life in a cage or a plastic storage tub.

I totally agree with you that hedgehogs should be out in the wild; but in Canada, they have specific breeders, so to speak, so the animals can be "domesticated"; what would happen if a captive-bred animal was put into the wild, though? Would it be able to fend for itself? I think there are some animals that just aren't meant to live in a home. 👌

Can they go back into the wild? That’s the question. I’m not really sure, to be honest.

A hedgehog in a cage? I really struggle with that! If you love them, set them free back in the wild.

I agree, whether it’s legal or not, let’s just leave the poor things alone.
