Hi everyone, we’ve just found out that our dog has Addison’s disease. This involves lifelong monthly treatment costing around £130 a month, which is a massive amount for us. Is anyone else in the same boat? Do you have any advice or suggestions for us? Thanks for your help, we’re feeling a bit desperate about the whole situation, especially as our dog is only eighteen months old. Thanks for your replies.

Hi, my girl has just been diagnosed with Addison’s as well. Could you share the contact details for your lab? I’m really worried about this becoming a total money pit.

Hi everyone, my dog has been living with Addison’s disease for five years. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. For his treatment, I actually get his meds made up directly by a lab, which works out much cheaper. I’m happy to share the contact details if you like. Even so, managing this condition is definitely very pricey.

    Hi,

My dog has had Addison's disease for 5 years. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

For his treatment, I have his meds made up specially by a lab, which works out cheaper. I can give you the contact details. Even so, this illness is certainly very pricey.

Thanks, but luckily we’ve also found a much more affordable solution by having capsules made up – it’s a tenth of the price! Now we’re just hoping the dosage is right!!! We'll have to see what the next blood tests show.

Thanks so much for your reply!

The vet looked into the human equivalent and it’s even more expensive. We’re going to call the vet school tomorrow to see if they’d be willing to provide the treatment for free. Fingers crossed. We’ve got no other options left. And that £155 is just for the meds. We’re looking at another £145 this month for the follow-up. It’s a massive amount.

    Hi there,

Did you manage to find a solution? Are you still paying that much?

I might be able to help, I pay much less than that.

Hi everyone, My dog has had Addison’s disease for five years now. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. For his treatment, I get his medication made up directly by a compounding lab, which works out cheaper. I can give you their contact details if you like. Even so, it is still a very expensive condition to manage.

"My dog has also just been diagnosed with Addison’s disease and I’d like to chat with other owners of dogs with this condition about the expensive treatment involved." Evening, my girl is 7 and a half and she has also just been diagnosed. She’s on 10mg of prednisolone a day, but my vet has prescribed 0.1mg of fludrocortisone and it costs about £230 a month. It’s a total nightmare for us... it’s just so expensive! 😳😥😢

Is there a human equivalent for this by any chance?

Maybe there are other vets who charge a bit less? (The cost of medication won't change, but not all vets have the same markup.) It’s worth checking with charity clinics (like the PDSA), vet schools, or local rescues...
