As the title says, overnight between Wednesday and Thursday my dog literally collapsed.
He got up from his armchair, went over to the door and then he just crumbled. He stayed lying there for a bit looking quite out of sorts, and then he was back to normal again.
This is the second time he’s had this kind of episode.
The first time (two months ago) I didn’t panic because five minutes later he was fine. Fainting can happen, just like it does with people. But now that it's happened twice...
Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
Just to be clear, I’m obviously not looking for a diagnosis, just some 'leads', and of course I’ve already contacted my vet—we have an appointment tomorrow at 4.30pm.

Enicia, no I've never given him any flea tablets. I used a Stronghold spot-on, but that was over two weeks ago. Nothing else since then.
Docline, he falls but goes "completely limp"—no stiffening or convulsing. I've seen several cases of epileptic dogs before, one really severe one (a Pointer) and others that weren't as bad (Dachshunds), and it doesn't look like that. But maybe it’s the start of epilepsy?
Your link isn't working; it's just showing up as loads of asterisks.
Oh dear, poor lad. The last time my dog did that, it was down to a reaction to Bravecto. I’m not saying it’s definitely that, of course, but it’s worth looking into: did you give him a wormer, flea treatment or any tablets shortly before?
Hi Mel, I'm really keen to hear the diagnosis and what the vet thinks... like Misanthrope said, maybe a mild vestibular syndrome (inner ear), or something with his blood sugar like hypoglycaemia. A stroke, epilepsy... a deficiency? Or maybe his teeth, like an abscess? Is he doing okay with his food? Are his nights quiet or is he restless? See you tomorrow, sending him some belly rubs while we wait for news. Best.
Hypoglycaemia, a deficiency, maybe. Mind you, I feed him well—well, I hope so lol, I'm doing my best.
Vestibular syndrome is possible. He’s shaking his head quite a bit at the moment, but I can't remember if he was doing that when he had his first funny turn.
He’s eating well. I’ve switched him over to a premium grain-free kibble; he’s almost finished the transition and is still having a small portion of Carnilove. Plus salmon oil, brewer’s yeast and Osteyl (treatment for his dodgy leg).
When he’s asleep, he’s out for the count. No restlessness, he just snores.
Apart from those two episodes two months apart, he's completely normal.
Mind you, he might be drinking more than usual. Well, more than the average dog, but then he’s always been a big drinker. No real change there for Odin.
I can't see anything wrong with his teeth, but he is chewing a lot at the moment. But that hasn't been going on for two months. And besides, if it were an abscess, it wouldn't have lasted two months, so I don't think it's that.
But I can always mention it to Dr Marc just in case.
We've had dogs before who've had strokes or epilepsy, but this doesn't really look like that. Maybe it’s the start of it, though? Especially as he’s still so young—he’s only 9 months old.
Yes @Lacurieuse, it is scary, especially when such a big lad just collapses like that.
I was also thinking maybe diabetes, since he’s drinking a lot. But I don't know if it causes those kinds of symptoms. I'm not going to go trawling the internet and diagnosing him with all sorts of rubbish, though.
We'll see what Dr Marc thinks.
Hi Mel
I’m really keen to hear the diagnosis and what the vet has to say..
Like @Misanthrope suggested, maybe a bit of vestibular syndrome (ear-related), or blood sugar issues like hypoglycaemia. A stroke, or epilepsy.
A deficiency? A tooth abscess?..
Is everything okay with their food?
Are the nights peaceful? Or are they restless?
Speak tomorrow, sending some cuddles in the meantime while we wait for news.
Best
Wow, that would really frighten me, I’ve never seen a dog have one! Or any other animal, for that matter... I definitely think a battery of tests is needed now, unfortunately.
