My dog has had a fainting spell

As the title says, overnight between Wednesday and Thursday my dog literally collapsed.

He got up from his armchair, went over to the door and then he just crumbled. He stayed lying there for a bit looking quite out of sorts, and then he was back to normal again.

This is the second time he’s had this kind of episode.

The first time (two months ago) I didn’t panic because five minutes later he was fine. Fainting can happen, just like it does with people. But now that it's happened twice...

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Just to be clear, I’m obviously not looking for a diagnosis, just some 'leads', and of course I’ve already contacted my vet—we have an appointment tomorrow at 4.30pm.

We’re relieved too, you acted quickly by going to the vet.

Dogues de Bordeaux are so lovely, I’d never seen one before...

    Thanks Doudou

Basically, it’s probably just like when we get up too quickly after lying down for a long time.

And maybe a bit of low blood sugar? It happened before he’d eaten.

Mind you, if any symptoms crop up during exercise, for example, or even in another context, we’ll get some more in-depth tests done.

Yeah, the ultrasound is a good thing; it’s already a relief.

    No blood test for diabetes?

No, not at the moment. I told the vet that I think he’s drinking a lot. But then again, it’s true that he’s a big lad and he eats about 1.75 lbs of dry food a day. He drinks plenty, but maybe it isn’t actually too much after all.

Hi there, Same question as Jador – what about a blood test? The ultrasound is already a good start and some positive news. :-) If his blood pressure is dropping, what would be the cause? Growing too fast? Or is he lacking something? Give Odin some cuddles from me, and I hope you get a better night's sleep.

We’ve seen the vet and it looks like it’s nothing serious; apparently it’s just his blood pressure dropping when he stands up.

He did a heart scan and everything was normal.

Of course, I’m going to keep a close eye on him and I’ll take him back if anything else happens. But for now, the vet isn't worried.

    I’m so relieved.
