My dog has had a fainting spell

As the title says, overnight between Wednesday and Thursday my dog literally collapsed.

He got up from his armchair, went over to the door and then he just crumbled. He stayed lying there for a bit looking quite out of sorts, and then he was back to normal again.

This is the second time he’s had this kind of episode.

The first time (two months ago) I didn’t panic because five minutes later he was fine. Fainting can happen, just like it does with people. But now that it's happened twice...

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Just to be clear, I’m obviously not looking for a diagnosis, just some 'leads', and of course I’ve already contacted my vet—we have an appointment tomorrow at 4.30pm.

Hi @Mel1, It’s true, I’d much rather go to the vet even if I'm unsure, if it might help my dogs. As for Volka, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life that I didn't drive the 600-odd miles to see her proper vet. Having consulted incompetent people here, I’ll always feel bitter that my dog and I were just treated like a cash cow by those two clinics. Thanks for what you said about Fidji. She had such a beautiful coat with lovely silvery highlights, shades of grey-beige and black, and a thick, silky coat... standing at the top of the rocks with the wind in her fur, she looked majestic... I really must dig out that photo. When we first got Volka, I felt like I was walking a poodle on a lead! 😁 As for the film, you mustn't skip the end ;-) Yes, he loses Hooch, but... definitely don't miss it. I actually thought there’d be a sequel to that movie... but no. Haha, your Odin reminds me of Fidji in my parents' garden before it was fenced off. She had her boundaries (the letterbox, the telegraph pole at the entrance to the land). Once a stranger crossed that line, she took charge of that person or dog as a guardian. A stranger could walk in, no barking, a lovely, grand welcome... and that stranger could leave as long as we were there (she was a very vigilant escort!). But if my parents or I were away, she was a different dog. A stranger (even someone she’d seen the day before and accepted) could walk in, and she’d wander alongside them like a friendly giant... however, it was 'impossible' for them to leave. She’d block the way, refusing to let the stranger go. It was quite impressive... They’d have to wait for us to get back, and then, suddenly, she’d be chilled out again. She was like that her whole life (even after seeing a dog trainer). Same with the car, the same behaviour of a dog looking out for her owners, her pack. Even in a place that wasn't hers, after a few minutes (for example, at a motorway service station), she’d monitor everyone coming in. Anyone she didn't take a liking to was under her watchful eye... (In public places or on the street, there were some people she didn't pay any attention to, as if they were invisible, while others she’d follow with a very steady gaze...) She was a natural guardian, no training needed. A real Sarpla.

Misanthrope, oh dear, now I’m even less keen to watch it. I’m not a fan of that sort of thing either. I think I’ll just skip the end.

    Haha, flying slobber! 😂

It reminds me of a really windy day when I was walking my parents' Great Dane around town. That dog was a total slobber machine lol

At one point he gives his head a shake and I just see these strings of drool getting whipped away by the wind 😂😂😂

The good thing about having a dog like that is that even if a passer-by behind you gets hit by a string of spit, they aren't exactly going to come over and have a go at you 😅

Beaujabote, poor Dogue de Bordeaux at the campsite, he must have felt so lost :(

It reminds me of a Dogue rescue video I saw on YouTube. The owner had taken his own life and the Dogue just completely snapped; he was lunging at everyone. But as soon as they got him out, he calmed right down and a few days later he was happy again—well, he certainly looks it in the videos.

Lacurieuse, that’s spot on. He’s aloof with people he doesn’t know, but as soon as he knows them, he’s all over them! And he definitely has his favourites! My nephews, aged 3 and 20, my sister-in-law, and a friend's daughter who’s disabled—he’s so happy when he sees them.

Doudou, your Fidgi was beautiful—with all that fur, she must have looked absolutely massive!

It’s true that I only ever run into small dogs, and they’re all crackers, lol. I had a little glimmer of hope for finding a mate for Odin earlier when I saw a Staffie playing in a park. Well, this time I was the one who crossed the road... As soon as the woman saw me, she put him back on the lead and he went mental, jumping around and barking; she was struggling to hold him.

It’s true I’ve got a good vet, but since he’s the one looking after my dog, it’s in his best interest to be his mate, given his size. Because with a small dog, you can afford to use a bit of force (even if it’s wrong, obviously), but with a big lad like mine or misanthrope’s... well, it’s better if the vet is a friend ;)

Wiegehts35, the vet bills aren’t what bothers me most; I’d pay double right now if it meant sorting all his issues. But honestly, I think my dog is just a bit of a jinx, lol. This summer he got stung by an insect (we think) and his leg swelled up all the way to the shoulder! So, off to the vet, X-rays, etc... all for him to prescribe me some Metacam that I already had at home, lol.

Mine doesn’t like people leaning over him either; it freaks him out. And that’s usually people’s first instinct when I meet someone in my village—because he’s scared of people here, they lean down to "reassure" him, but it just makes it worse...

I think it’s common for mastiff types to be really zen and goofy, but to turn into monsters if there’s a threat (real or not). During the week, I was in the car with Odin, and this guy was looking at the dog, laughing, saying "he’s watching me out of the corner of his eye," lol. He didn’t have the soundtrack: "GrrRRRrrrrrrRRRRRRrrrrr." He got the message once there was a big woof. I have to admit, it made me feel better :) because I’m really paranoid with my dog; I’m always worried about him being stolen when I leave him in the car. Now I know he’ll defend the car, it puts my mind at rest.

The Gers, D'Artagnan country... His statue at the top of the steps... lovely part of the world.

Yes, it's right next to my grandparents' place! His descendants own a forest that borders my grandparents'... It's the local legend.

😁 The Paris area is great for uni! And I really like the Landes; the South West of France is lovely. Maybe a bit too quiet though... and yeah, they’d be bouncing around like kangaroos! At least Oxane is in that phase of "Mum, I can reach your shoulders, do you want a kiss?" 😁 Yeah, it’s brilliant. I’m in my first year now so I’ve been able to stay at home with my parents. I'm not at uni in Paris itself though, because the commute would be far too long! I love it, plus I’ve got family (my grandparents and my aunt) in the Gers, so that’s only two hours away, and we’ve got friends nearby too... even my parents are tempted, but they’d have to wait until retirement... And yeah, mine does the kangaroo thing depending on who it is—only with the people she’s got a real bond with! @Beaujabote: don't feel guilty! I’m very close to my parents and I’m pretty easy-going, I think, so living together works perfectly!

Especially that scene where the dog charges at Turner with his jowls flapping in the wind and flying slobber. Yeah, it’s such a classic moment in that film! The flying... slobber... ^^ In Disney films, they just can't help killing off the parents—the mum or the dad—either at the start or at the end... Or leaving them as orphans... orphan girls... orphan boys...

Right, I’m going to sound like a terrible mum 🙂 but I’m actually quite looking forward to my offspring flying the nest a bit – I’m fed up with the "what’s for tea?" and "I’ve run out of socks". Fingers crossed my eldest, who’s starting Year 11 in September, gets into boarding school! 😁 And as for the film, I’d forgotten the dog dies – I mostly remember the scene where the dog charges at Turner with his jowls flapping and slobber flying everywhere.

😁 Letting go... YESss, I totally get your parents; my daughter is 12 and I don't even want to think about the day she flies the nest... 😞 For Vava, the ideal would be not to move too far away or to the other side of the world ;-) I had to leave our daughter and our Volka with my parents once (because of my husband's job, very far away). It was almost a month without them (without my girls). I missed a Christmas with them (that Christmas, even though I was with my husband, was a bit of a sad one). Big cuddles to your little 'Bulldozer', she’d have a blast with Oxane 😁

Yeah, I’m 18 but it’s the same for me, though I’m in the London area so I shouldn’t be moving too far, unless I manage to move out to the coast after my studies (so in 4 or 5 years). Yeah, I can imagine, leaving your family is really hard, especially over the festive season...

I can really see them playing together 😂 there aren't many Labs round here, let alone young ones, but I imagine their playdates must be brilliant!
