Should I get my male Cocker Spaniel neutered?

Hi everyone,

I have an 8-month-old Cocker Spaniel and I wanted to know if it's necessary to get him neutered. He's a male called Bill; he doesn't have any behavioural issues at the moment, but I'm thinking about it as a preventative measure.

Are there any downsides to neutering?

Does a neutered Cocker Spaniel end up looking unattractive?

Thanks

It can affect the coat quality to some extent, yes. For a short-haired dog, the difference won't be obvious at all – it might even be invisible. For dogs with medium or long coats, you’ll probably notice it more, especially if you like your pup looking well-groomed and pampered. Then again, is it really that serious? It’s for the owner to decide (the dog won’t care either way!)...

Yes, the problem has been sorted with the help of a really good dog trainer.

My dog is nearly 4. He was neutered at around 8 months old, just before I adopted him. He definitely hasn't lost his looks—far from it! For any dog, whether they’ve been neutered or not, a good diet and plenty of exercise are all it takes to stop them from piling on the pounds!

Pfft, yeah, it makes them look ugly too! Among other things!

Five days ago you were at your wits' end with your dog's behaviour – has that been sorted out? Neutering has its pros and cons, so it’s up to you to weigh them up.

Apparently, a Cocker Spaniel's coat can change after they’ve been neutered, but I can’t say for sure.

If you've got any neutered cocker spaniels, could you send me some photos please?

I never said it would make him more obedient, thanks for your replies. But does getting him neutered make him look ugly? You can avoid diabetes with a suitable diet.

I think you’ve already had plenty of replies on your other posts...

Neutering just helps stop a dog from wandering off if he scents a ***** in season and potentially prevents rivalries between males.

But neutering will absolutely not make your dog more obedient..

As for the downsides, neutering causes a hormonal imbalance, with the possibility of weight gain, conditions like diabetes, a duller coat... basically, it’s not a minor thing.

Just to be clear, I’ve got nothing against neutering; I have two neutered males myself.
