Puppy walking sideways

Evening all!

I’ve got a question about my 10-week-old puppy (English Cocker Spaniel).

I’m a bit worried as I’ve just noticed he walks sideways (especially when he’s running) and sometimes he sits with his legs out to the side rather than tucked under him.

Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this or any stories from your own experience?

Thanks 😉😉

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice regarding my two-month-old puppy who has swimmer puppy syndrome. I’ve tried everything, including exercises and hydrotherapy, but my pup still isn't walking.

Hi there, It's actually quite common for puppies (and even young adults) to 'crab' or walk sideways. You'll notice it most when they're trotting along. If it's just down to their age, then there's no need to worry; this gait usually isn't an issue for the dog. They'll gradually learn how to run straight (this can take a bit of time—some dogs straighten up quickly, while others might still be crab-walking at 2 years old). Do keep an eye on your pet, though—make sure they aren't limping and that their legs look properly formed. Try to avoid letting them use the stairs until they're a bit older and have finished growing (up to about 1 year old). Don't hesitate to have a chat with your vet during their vaccination appointments if you're concerned. Floriane

Oh no, Doudou, I actually love the SURF pose! He shouldn't stop doing it, it’s so unfair! 😝

    Hi there,

Is there anything going on with their ears? An ear infection or inflammation can definitely change the way a dog walks or runs...

Especially with long ears (it’s well worth checking).

Since it's a puppy, check their nails (how they sit on the ground), their pads (for thorns, grass seeds, etc.), and their general stance when they're standing up.

Do check carefully for a minor sprain or strain (it happens a lot with bouncy puppies) and it can be quite subtle depending on the pup.

In all seriousness, I’ve actually seen a Cocker Spaniel puppy running and take a heavy tumble because he’d stepped on one of his own ears!

Check the ears (make sure there’s no brown or black discharge).

If you could take a short video? (Maybe upload it to YouTube).

That would help, and it might even be useful for your vet to see.

The way puppies sit: they can be completely lopsided (on their hips) with one thigh on the floor, one (or both) back legs stretched out, and the other tucked in... or both stretched out.

Both thighs out like a frog, as if they’re sitting in an armchair...

My Lab sleeps on the sofa like that! Sitting up, completely folded in two, front paws on her belly between her back legs, with all four paws almost at the same level.

Puppies get into the most surprising positions.

The "frog" position (or splooting) usually disappears as they get older.

Also, the microchip... it can sometimes be a bit uncomfortable just after it’s been done.

Hi, I'm not sure about the walking sideways, but my Lab – the big lad – doesn't have his bum and paws aligned when he sits. Well, not quite yet anyway, though it is getting better... I think it’s just down to their build at that age. He’s been seen twice already for his boosters and a check-up and got the all-clear, so I think the way they sit just evolves as a puppy grows. When he first arrived, his legs were out to the side too, but now he’s almost sitting straight with his paws tucked under his bum.

"Walking sideways" – what do you mean exactly? Is he crab-walking or are his legs splaying out?

My dog had a leg that went a bit wonky when he was a puppy; the vet gave me a homeopathic treatment and it straightened out fine.

Yours is still very young, so it could be a growth issue like my dog had. If so, it needs to be sorted out quickly. But it could be something else too, so the best thing is to see the vet to find out for sure.

"He's been to the vet"... which vet, theirs???? Take him to YOUR own vet... it's a good thing you're taking him to the vet tomorrow, you'll have much more peace of mind... but use your own vet!!!

    Keep us updated!!

Good evening, he came from a breeder. He saw the vet before I picked him up and got a clean bill of health. I’ve got an appointment at the end of the month for his booster jabs. I think I'll take him in tomorrow anyway, just for peace of mind.

Evening, did you buy them from a breeder or a private seller??? Have you taken them to a vet??? The best thing would be to see a vet for a full check-up.....
