My Chihuahua weighs 11lbs at 1 year and 3 months old. He measures 30cm at the shoulder, but he isn't fat. Could anyone give me some more info?!?!

Thanks (:

Hi there, I’ve got a Chihuahua-Papillon cross myself that I got from professional breeders. He’s 2 years and 4 months old now and weighed about 13 lbs the last time we checked. His weight and size still shock me, especially as I saw his parents who were both Kennel Club registered, unlike my Milou. I do wonder why that is, actually. Anyway, I certainly have some questions about my boy, but it doesn't matter where he came from or whether he’s a purebred or not; nothing will change the love we have for each other—not even his big bum! 😉

I've got a pedigree Chihuahua – nearly 3 years old – he's a long-haired tricolour (ginger, caramel, and cream) and he weighs 11 lbs!

His dad weighed about 4.5 lbs and his mum nearly 9 lbs... he's in great shape, not an ounce of fat on him, and he's got loads of energy!

Here he is as a puppy and now!

Thula, your dog is absolutely stunning and I completely agree with you, even though my girl is a Chihuahua ratter cross.

I have a 13-year-old Chihuahua cross who weighs 5kg (about 11 lbs) – see the photo – and she’s about the size of a Miniature Pinscher. I’ve come across Chihuahuas that size out on walks, including a long-haired ginger one that looked just like a little fox. I thought he was gorgeous. I’ve seen on dog programmes that in the US they can have quite large Chihuahuas. In my opinion, that might be the case with yours; a larger build than the current trendy standard which tends towards miniaturisation and all the health problems that come with it. Or maybe your dog is a crossbreed like mine? If so, there’s the issue of the price you paid for him. But if you can look past that, you can have a wonderful dog, just like mine.

No, I didn't notice the date, I'll admit that! But my question still stands! My dog won't be officially registered, but despite his size and weight (he’ll probably be the same as yours when he’s an adult), he is a Chihuahua; his parents are KC registered. Mind you, it doesn't change a thing—the same parents without papers would still be purebred Chihuahuas! It's just wrong to say that if they aren't KC registered, they aren't purebred.

Oh boy, here we go!! I love it when I read "not KC registered so not a pedigree"!! I have a five-and-a-half-month-old Chihuahua, and he already weighs 3.3kg (about 7.3 lbs) and stands 25cm at the withers. And yet, he comes from a line of very tiny, Kennel Club registered Chihuahuas. His sister from the same litter only weighs 1kg (2.2 lbs) and his brother is 1.5kg (3.3 lbs); the mum is 2.4kg (5.3 lbs) and the dad is 1.8kg (4 lbs)... I’ve ended up with the giant!! He is KC registered but will never be "confirmed" as meeting the breed standard since he’s already over the 3kg (6.6 lbs) maximum limit!!! He is a REAL Chihuahua! Just like some men are only 5'3" while others can be 7'2" — are we going to say they aren't men????

Anyway, can anyone tell me what the maximum size a Chihuahua can reach? If you're going to tell me he's not a Chihuahua, don't bother — he definitely is one!

Have you seen how old this post is?

And yes, no KC registration = not a pedigree. She mentioned that both parents weren't registered, so her Chihuahua wasn't a pedigree dog. There's no need to overcomplicate things; that partly explains why his weight and size don't meet the breed standard. It doesn't change how much we love our dogs, though.
