Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and have three Chihuahuas. My youngest, Chanel, is 5 years old and I've noticed she has no front teeth left, only her canines. I'm waiting to book an appointment with the vet but I'm scared after looking on the internet that it might be gum disease, thanks for any advice.

    Hi there,

Your dog’s teeth falling out could be caused by periodontal disease. However, this is usually painful for the dog before the teeth actually drop out: have you noticed your dog eating less or struggling to eat? Does he have bad breath? If so, there’s a good chance that’s the issue. It’s worth noting that Chihuahuas are a breed that frequently suffers from tartar build-up and, consequently, periodontitis (don’t hesitate to take your other Chihuahuas to the vet for a dental scale and polish).

That said, not having teeth won’t stop your dog from eating (as long as he isn’t in pain). If you do notice he’s having trouble chewing his dry food, you can soak it in a little water to soften it up.

As for gum disease, the teeth falling out is a symptom of it in itself: perhaps that’s what you saw? In any case, as long as your dog is eating normally, things should be fine. If he does start eating less, it’s best to see the vet, who will prescribe a treatment suited to the cause of the pain (whether it's bacteria, inflammation, etc.).

    I hope this helps,

    Anais

One of my cats lost a canine. It was a localised gum infection—basically, a bit of inflammation. Nothing serious. A bit of treatment from the vet and he didn’t lose any more teeth. Maybe it’ll be the same for your dog. Hang in there, it’s far too early to panic!

Hang in there and wait for the vet's opinion....!

A word of advice: try to avoid looking things up online, as you'll find all sorts of rubbish on there. Your best bet is to get the vet's opinion.
