My dog was killed by another dog – what should I do?

Hi everyone,

I’m posting on here because I’m at my wits' end and just don’t know what to do anymore...

My dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was attacked by another dog while we were out for a walk. It all happened so quickly – there were probably less than twenty minutes between the attack and her passing away at the vet's.

The other owner gave me a fake phone number, so of course, I don't have his details. That said, I’ve spoken to several other dog owners in my neighbourhood who say this dog is a known problem; it has apparently attacked several dogs already and the owner couldn't care less.

My husband and I tried to report it to the police, but the officer wouldn't take a statement. I’m absolutely devastated by every part of this: the fact the dog is clearly aggressive, the fact that THANKFULLY I wasn’t out with my two-year-old son that day as he could have been in my dog's place, the loss of her... I feel like I have no recourse at all.

Does anyone know what I can do to track this owner down? Is there a way to force them to muzzle their dog? I’m not even looking to get the vet bills back or anything – nothing will bring my dog back – I just want our dogs and children to be safe...

😔 I’m so sorry about your dog. It really feels like reporting it to the police is a waste of time these days.

In France, and back home in Belgium too, the police are so lax it makes you wonder what they’re actually there for!

Try to get as many witness statements as you can, and don’t leave out the fact that your report wasn’t even taken. Make sure you mention it, as it will only make your case stronger.

It’s a disgrace; our governments are already in a total shambles, and now the police as well! Have you thought about asking your vet for a written statement on the condition your dog was in after the attack?

Hang in there, Lili, and please keep us posted. Thanks.

You could try getting in touch with charities like the RSPCA or the Blue Cross.

They might be able to give you some advice or even provide some assistance.

I wish you the strength to see this through to the end despite your heartbreak

(other dogs' lives are at stake)

Gather as many witness statements as you can

(local vets, other owners in the area, a note in the local shop, etc.)

Go to the council, alert the local press if necessary, and report this irresponsible owner!

I’m so sorry to hear about what happened to your little girl. As Emla mentioned, the police are duty-bound to take your report.

File your report online; they aren't allowed to refuse a formal complaint and will be obliged to see you.

Contact your local council as well, as the dog might have been reported already.

I am so truly sorry for the loss of your dog...
