Leaving a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel alone during the day

Hi everyone,

I’ve been seriously thinking about getting a dog lately and have been looking into the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I’ve done quite a bit of research but haven’t really been able to figure out whether or not a CKC can be left home alone (from about 9.30 am to 4 pm) two days a week.

I already have a cat at home, so he wouldn't be completely on his own, but I was still wondering if it’s doable. Just for context, I live in a flat (it's quite spacious, a duplex) and I have several terraces (I’m thinking of leaving one open all day so he can get some fresh air). Given the current situation, it would be a gradual transition as there will always be someone working from home until June.

Thanks for your help :)!

Hi everyone, the Cavalier King Charles is my absolute favourite breed and I’m also looking to adopt one... I’m away from home for about 5 hours straight every day; would it be possible to manage without a dog sitter if I gradually get him used to my absence? No. Absolutely not, especially if it’s a puppy. You’d end up with a chronically stressed animal and their brain wouldn’t develop properly: being a social animal is a dog’s most important trait. Even more so than for humans. And yet, nobody would dream of leaving a small child in social isolation for hours on end every day, especially during their formative stages.

They are definitely dogs that are very attached to their owners and very lively.

Mind you, I still know plenty of them with owners who work... two days a week doesn’t seem like an impossible task to me.

But during the puppy stage, at least until they are 6 months old, you would definitely need to find someone to pop in—a neighbour, a local retiree... with such a cute little dog, I’m sure you’d find someone.

From what I know, this breed doesn't cope well with being left alone for long periods. For those two days when you’re going to be out for a long time, hiring a dog sitter could be the solution ;)
