Entire male and spayed female living together

Hello,

I’m the owner of a male Cairn Terrier who is nearly 9 years old. He’s an entire male and has never mated. I’m planning to get a female puppy from a breeder, but I have a few questions about them living together; I intend to have her spayed before her first season to prevent any accidental mating.

Even if the female is spayed, will my dog still want to try and mate with her? Is it possible for an entire male and a spayed female to mate even if there's no risk of pregnancy?

I’m worried there might be some issues with them living together because of this, as I don’t want my dog pestering her all the time.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I followed my vet's advice at the time. Since I didn't want my dog to have a litter, I figured it was best to spare her the seasons and the risk of mammary tumours.

Thanks so much for your replies, that’s really put my mind at rest. What are your thoughts on spaying before her first season?

Actually, it’s true that a neutered male can mount an unspayed female.

It does seem a bit odd if they’ve both been neutered, though.

Docline, who is on here, has already shared her experience regarding a neutered male who mounted an unspayed female.

However, with a male who has never mated in his life and doesn't have a female in season to 'set him off', I’d be surprised if that happened.

Anyway, a female is unlikely to put up with it if she isn't in season... The males who have tried it on with my dog soon learned their lesson! :-)

    That must be incredibly rare.

    Hi there

    Tania probably meant mating 😉

Exactly, if she’s not in season, the male won’t get excited

Hi, in my opinion, there shouldn't be any urge to mate if she's been spayed.

Oops, cheers Del, the joys of being on a mobile 😐
