What legal category do Bull Terriers fall into?

Hi everyone!

As the title says, I'm wondering what category Bull Terriers actually fall into?

I'm asking because a friend of mine has one and she was telling me that she's legally not allowed to let him off-lead, and that depending on where she goes, she has to muzzle him... I must admit I was a bit baffled, so I did a bit of digging. On some websites, they're listed as Category 3, just like Fox Terriers. But on others, Bull Terriers are classed as Category 2, or even Category 1 based on certain physical traits... (Something I absolutely loathe: judging a dog purely on its looks -_-...).

I'm turning to you lot to help clear this up! ^^

Thanks in advance! ^^

Hi Noan, I’d recommend leaving that to your parents. Training a puppy isn’t easy. Plus, taking them to a proper dog training club would be ideal for learning how to train a dog :)

Hi, I’m Noan and I’m 12. I’ve got a Staffy who is six weeks old. I’d like to train him but I don’t know how to do it. Could I have some advice please? I’d like him to be able to bark, jump, lie down, attack, and also wait for me to tell him when to eat before he starts. Thanks in advance.

Hi, keeping your dog on a lead is mandatory in town regardless of the breed. Bull Terriers aren't a restricted breed, so they don't need to wear a muzzle :) Dlorence, dog trainer for a canine training and behaviour service

They CANNOT be in Category 2, it’s IMPOSSIBLE because there are only three breeds in that category: the Am Staff (KC registered), the Rottweiler (KC registered or not), and the Tosa (KC registered).

Depending on certain physical characteristics, as you say, it could potentially be classed as Category 1 at a stretch, but a pedigree Bull Terrier—being KC registered—doesn't fall into either of those categories.

Bull Terriers aren't actually 'categorised' dogs, so they don't fall into the Category 1 or 2 brackets. Generally speaking, all dogs have to be kept on a lead in built-up areas anyway. Muzzles are only compulsory for those specific restricted breeds. There’s no such thing as a 'Category 3'—she must have got confused between breed groups and legal categories (the Terrier group is Group 3, which is the one Bull Terriers belong to).

He’s not in any category. He isn’t what you’d call a "dangerous dog".

Besides, there are only two categories anyway.

If you mean breed groups, he’s in the Terrier group. But he’s got nothing to do with categorised dogs :)
