Hi everyone, I adopted Happy from a rescue shelter a few days ago. Everything is going brilliantly, except for a small issue regarding her toilet habits 💩. She won't do a wee or a poo while on the lead; she only goes when she's off-lead in a park.
Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation? Does anyone have any advice for me?
Thanks everyone 😃

Make sure to pack a comfy bed, an item of clothing with your scent on it, and a chew for the flight! You can also get calming tablets to help with the stress, as travelling in the hold is quite an ordeal!
In the end, it was a lot of worry for nothing, she’s gone to the toilet on the lead several times now!!! :-) thanks for all your advice, using a long line was a brilliant way to handle the transition from off-lead to the lead. Now the challenge is getting her into her travel crate; she’s flying the day after tomorrow and it’s going to be a bit of a struggle haha
Turns out it was a lot of worry for nothing, she’s done her business on the lead several times now!!! :-) thanks for all your advice, using a long line was a brilliant way to manage the transition from being off-lead to on the lead. Now the challenge is getting her into her travel crate; she’s flying the day after tomorrow and we’ve definitely got our work cut out for us haha.
I adopted Gigi (a little 5.5 lb rescue crossbreed) a fortnight ago and it was impossible to get her out, let alone get her to go to the toilet outside...
Since this weekend, she’s been toilet trained during the day (with just one wee on a puppy pad at night) and she’s done a poo outside! You should have seen the fuss I made over her 👍😁 (the neighbours must have thought I’d gone completely mad!!)
With plenty of patience and some treats, your little one will eventually understand what you want from them ♥
All I can say about this is that my dog likes to pick up a bit of speed before doing a poo ^^ it sounds a bit bizarre put like that, but you really notice it; when she’s on the lead, she speeds up for a good distance before finding her spot.
It’s completely instinctive for her. So, I reckon a dog that hasn't really been used to being on a lead might have their rhythm "broken" and end up holding it in. It's not necessarily because they’ve been told off for having accidents or anything like that, it’s just a matter of the lead getting in the way of their natural flow.
Hi there :-)
Thanks a lot for your replies. She did actually go to the toilet when we used the long lead. I think she just needs to get used to us and to being on a lead. At the moment, we’re trying to get her to do her business on the pavement, because our little princess will only go on the beaches of the French Riviera haha! It’s not a problem in the evening, but during the day with all the crowds, it’s just not possible.
This sounds like a typical reaction for a dog that’s been told off for having accidents. Like everyone’s said, try using a long lead and, most importantly, give her heaps of praise when she actually goes. Give her some time to build up her trust in you as well; she’s only just arrived.
Welcome to the club! My Border Collie is exactly the same—she refuses to go to the toilet outside. I adopted her on the 3rd of February.
Lola was found abandoned out in the countryside. I adopted her as soon as she was listed on the local council pound’s website, once her time there was up. Lola is very timid.
Even if we go for a four-hour walk, Lola prefers to hold it in and wait until she's on the patio to relieve herself.
I think your girl is just like mine; she probably lived in a garden or a yard and wasn't used to walking on a lead. You’re lucky you can let her off-lead, because I certainly can’t.
She’s already escaped once by managing to slip out of her harness. I found Lola a week later, and she was even more skittish than before.
I’m just letting Lola do her own thing and giving her the time she needs to get used to going outside. I know it’ll be a long process, but it’s a labour of love, isn't it?
