Tipping over her bowls

Hi everyone,

My girl has been acting quite strange lately.

After her evening meal, she knocks over her water bowl even when it’s still got water in it, and starts playing with it in the middle of the night. It's really annoying because she does it once the whole house is already asleep, so I can't get up to refill it for her.

Another thing – in the morning before I head off to work, I leave her water out, and after gulping it down, she tips it over again. I’ve decided to try and teach her a lesson by leaving the bowl empty for a bit, and I’ve told my sister not to give her any more water until later on.

She isn't short of water, it’s just this new habit of tipping the bowl that I find weird.

She gets plenty of walks, and she's all up to date with her jabs and worming.

Has this happened to anyone else on here before?

Hi there, My girl used to do the exact same thing when she was a puppy, and she still does it every now and then—though very rarely—when it's nearly empty. She then paddles in it or lies right in the puddle; I reckon it's a way for her to cool down as well. I went for a travel bowl I found on Amazon; it has a sort of floating lid on top that the dog has to nudge down slightly with their snout to make the water come up (there are holes in the disk to let the water through). She can't knock the bowl over anymore (even if she tries, the base stays put!), and it’s great for dogs that gulp their water as it stops them making such a mess everywhere. We're in the dry season here, so the heat isn't an issue at the moment, and she's stopped knocking her water bowl over for now.

Well, there you go—you really should opt for a raised stand. It’s got everything you need to keep the bowls in place and stops the dog from making a right mess everywhere. Plus, it’s brilliant because it saves them from having to stoop down and hurting themselves. :) @Zanaya, I’ve ordered one from a pet shop, but it won’t be in stock until September (I’m in Congo, which is why some accessories are quite hard to come by). Mind you, looking at the photo, I’d be surprised if she doesn’t manage to knock it over eventually. She’s a very playful Malinois and isn't scared of anything!

    Hi everyone,

my girl has been acting quite strange lately.

After her evening meal, she tips over her water bowl even though there's still water in it, and then starts playing with it (during the night). What’s annoying is that she tips it just when the whole house is already asleep, so there’s no chance of getting up to refill it for her.

Another thing: in the morning before I leave for work, I leave her water bowl out, and after lapping it up greedily, she tips it over again. I’ve decided to punish her by leaving the bowl empty.

I've also told my sister not to give her any water until a certain amount of time has passed.

She isn't short of water, but I find this habit of tipping the bowl really odd and it's a new thing.

She’s walked regularly and she's all up to date with her jabs and worming treatments.

Has this happened to anyone else here?

I think your dog has a bit of a cat-like side to her! Cats are masters at interacting with their environment and making "discoveries". "I’ll push this ornament, and when it falls, it makes a noise. Oh? Look, another one, let's see what happens with this one."

In my house, it was my cat who started tipping over the water bowl one day when I decided to serve their water in a soup bowl. The bottom was much narrower than the rim, so the "bowl" was unstable. The cat discovered that this instability meant the bowl could be tipped over!

As for my dog, she discovered the law of gravity a few months ago. "If instead of bringing the ball back to my owner when they throw it down a slope, I drop it right in the middle of the hill, it starts rolling again without my owner doing anything, while they’re just hanging about at the top of the hill getting bored while I have fun watching the ball move on its own."

Punishing her might only work if you catch the dog in the act. And the best punishment in that case would just be to raise your voice slightly the moment she goes to tip it. If raising your voice stops her in her tracks, then that simple correction is working. Punishing her the next morning, though... honestly, there's no way she'll understand.

    Hi ES,

That’s a good point and it could well be the case! Plus, she moves her bowl around to play with it afterwards.

So much so that I’ve opted to only leave it down for her for half an hour before I go to bed.

Let me explain: I pour her dry food, and then half an hour later when I hear her starting to play with the tipped-over bowl, I go and take the bowl away and give her a firm "no". That way, the house can sleep in peace.

She hasn't tipped the water bowl since.

Well, there we go, you should definitely go for a raised feeder as it has everything to keep the bowls secure and stops the dog from making a right mess everywhere. Plus, it's brilliant because it stops the dog from having to stoop down and hurting themselves :)

That’s interesting, she’s got that type of bowl but without the raised stand.

    Hi there,

First of all, you shouldn't punish a dog; it's pointless as they won't understand what they've done wrong :)

What kind of bowl are you using?

You really need raised ones so they don't have to stoop so low, so I'd go for the type in the photo. That way, you won't have any more issues with bowls being tipped over, and your girl will be much happier :)

To her, it's just a game! My GSD did the same thing while we were away on holiday ^^
