Sticky discharge from my dog's vulva

Hi everyone (I'm not sure if the photo has uploaded properly...)

My dog was mated over a month ago. But she has this bit of discharge leaking... I can't tell if it's her mucus plug or if it's completely normal during pregnancy....

(We've already had it confirmed by the vet that she is pregnant.)

Thanks for your replies.

This looks very similar to the discharge my dog had a while back (she wasn’t pregnant at the time).

It turned out to be vaginitis, which cleared up completely after a course of antibiotics.

Keep us posted on how she’s doing! 🙂

Hi, if your girl was mated less than 2 months ago, she’s in the dioestrus stage and this discharge is abnormal. Darkish discharge shortly after she's been in season is normal (clearing out leftover blood from her heat), and discharge during whelping (placental separation) is also normal, but anything else isn't. In this case, you really need to see a vet. The only exception where vaginal discharge might be normal is if it's clear and translucent; in that case, it’s likely vaginal mucus and a sign of pregnancy (though it’s not 100% proof). Abnormal discharge can be down to vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina), which is fairly common and usually has a good prognosis, or in more serious cases, it could be pyometra, which can be life-threatening. Hope this helps, Anais. No more discharge today. It was definitely stringy to the naked eye and quite clear (obviously, it didn't look the same in the photo as it did in real life). Anyway, the discharge has stopped now, but I've booked an appointment with the vet just to be on the safe side and make sure everything is okay.

Hi there, If your dog was mated less than two months ago, she is in the diestrus stage and this discharge is abnormal. While discharge that turns dark shortly after her season (clearing out blood residue) or discharge during whelping (due to placental separation) is normal, anything else is not. In this case, you should take her to see a vet. The only exception where vaginal discharge might be normal is if it's clear and translucent. In that case, it is likely vaginal mucus and suggests she might be pregnant (though this isn't a 100% guarantee). Abnormal discharge can be caused by vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina), which is quite common in female dogs and usually has a good prognosis. However, in more serious cases, it could be due to pyometra, which can be life-threatening. I hope this helps, Anaïs

Sadly, metritis is far worse than that, it’s a different story altogether.

It’d be best to give the vet a ring... I’m not sure about a pregnant dog, but in a non-pregnant dog, it could be metritis.

If your vet has confirmed that your dog is pregnant, give them a ring or email the photo over before your next scheduled appointment. Hopefully, they can put your mind at rest without you needing to book a separate visit. Best of luck with everything.
