Name ideas for my Malinois?

Hi everyone, I’ve just joined the forum to get some advice on training my two-and-a-half-month-old Malinois puppy!

But first things first, I’d love to find a name for him! Is it mandatory to give him a name starting with ‘R’? If it is, I’m completely stumped—I’m not really a fan of any I’ve found online, though I do quite like the name ‘Viking’ (don’t ask me why, lol!).

I’ll post a few photos so you can see his little face and hopefully help me come up with some ideas! :)

Like, Clipperton sounds pretty cool (to me), but it’s not exactly a brilliant name (personally).

He’s gorgeous, personally I quite like ‘Rocket’ 😁

Thanks everyone for your replies! So, R'Viking will be his official name. I’m going to get him KC registered so he can be used for breeding later on, and I’d love to keep a little girl from the litter. He’s still far too young to be thinking about all that yet, though! Since Viking is the first dog that’s truly mine, I’ll be asking you for advice whenever I’m in a bit of a muddle :)

See you soon—hopefully not too soon, in a way! x

I find that in terms of pronunciation, they aren't exactly soft syllables. The 'CL', 'P' and 'T' sounds are actually quite 'sharp'.

Mind you, it’s probably not the best example, but I think the main thing is to avoid picking a name that’s too muted.

I don't think Clipperton has much of a ring to it at all! It just goes to show how differently we all see things! 😉

Evening, Choosing a puppy's name is a really personal decision. As others have already mentioned, you can still get your preferred name onto the dog's official papers even if it doesn't start with the required letter for that year. You’d essentially end up with something like R'Vinking on the registration.

Clipperton – you’re right, it’s got a real ring to it!

In my opinion, it’s about more than just the length and the number of syllables; it depends a lot on the name itself, too.

While a name like Eapha (pronounced ‘Ifa’) is a bit too soft and doesn't really carry... on the other hand, Clipperton might be long but it’s got a real snap to it, just like Gäskalir (yes, I’m making these up!).

    Oops! I missed the 2! I meant 2 syllables...

I reckon two syllables is the limit for a dog. It’s true that nicknames always crop up later on, but for training, it’s best to have a fairly short name. Actually, you usually use their nickname when you’re just chatting to your pooch, but when it comes to recall (or telling them off), you tend to use their proper name!
