My puppy attacks me when I scold her

Hi everyone, so I got a Belgian Malinois puppy a week ago. But when she starts chewing the sofa or taking things she shouldn't... I tell her off, then she growls at me and lunges. But if I just leave her to it, she destroys everything.

I've tried scruffing her, giving her a bit of a shake, or even putting my hand in her mouth, but nothing works—she's back at it again two seconds later.

Also, she eats her own poo in the morning and evening; I'm guessing she must be hungry, but I'm giving her the amount of dry food recommended on the bag (56g across 3 meals). The brand of kibble is a natural, grain-free one.

I would also like to know when the puppy nipping phase usually ends?

Thanks for any advice, she's lovely otherwise.

If I just let her be, though, she destroys everything. I’ve tried grabbing her by the scruff of her neck and giving her a bit of a shake, or putting my hand in her mouth, but nothing works—she just does the same thing again two seconds later. She also eats her own poo in the morning and evening; I’m guessing she’s hungry, but I’m giving her the amount of dry food recommended on the packet (about 2oz for each of her three meals). It’s a high-protein grain-free brand. I’d also like to know when the puppy nipping stage usually stops? Thanks for any advice, she’s lovely otherwise!

The brand is a natural type of kibble. I’d really like to know when this puppy nipping phase finally ends? Thanks for any advice, she’s lovely otherwise.

    Yes, it’s 56g (about 2oz) per meal.

She doesn’t know how to walk on a lead yet.

She has three toys, including a Kong that I put some Dairylea in.

If only this were a troll, I’d feel much better...! 😯 I’ve just seen the part about 2 oz for 3 meals... so is that per meal or per day?? Because that’s roughly what my little sausage eats daily! That’s not much at all for a puppy of that size :-( Yeah, I hope it’s just a typo, because if she’s only eating 2 oz a day... no, surely not! 🤪

    Hi there,

I completely agree with the advice you've been given so far. Especially regarding getting a dog behaviourist if you’re feeling overwhelmed by your Malinois puppy’s boundless energy.

I had a Belgian Shepherd (Tervueren) myself and went through a really tough time because of his tendency to bite me. There was a point where I was actually scared of his aggressive reactions, and I had to call out a behaviourist for a home visit to see what was "going wrong"... It didn't solve everything straight away, but it made a massive difference for us.

I really hope this is a troll, it would be a relief if it was...! 😯

That’s not exactly a lot for a puppy that size :-(

She’s only been with you for a week; it’s a massive upheaval for her as it is, and you’re already starting to tell her off. My puppy took at least a fortnight or three weeks to really settle in with us. To get to know the house, us, our routine...

I don't think picking her up by the scruff of her neck is a good idea, for a start. It’s quite aggressive!

When she’s eating something she shouldn’t, try to distract her with a toy, a Kong, a ball—anything really.
