Malinois growth and adult size

Hi everyone,

I'm starting this thread to 'compare' Haïko's size with other Malinois as they grow.

At 3 months = 15.2kg (approx. 33.5lbs)

At 4 months = 18kg (approx. 39.7lbs)

At 5 months = 23.4kg (approx. 51.6lbs)

At 6 months = 28kg (approx. 61.7lbs / 4st 6lb) and roughly 58cm (23in) - it's hard to tell for sure with a dog that's wriggling all over the place!

His dad was quite big and he takes after him, so we know he's going to be a big lad ^^

In my opinion @siana, your dog will be outside the breed standard. I’ve known many Malinois that stood at over 70cm and weighed 110lbs at 10 months old... But he’ll definitely be over the standard; mine is 62cm and weighs about 60lbs...

Yes, it all depends on the dog, but I think that’s just a trait of the Belgian Shepherd breed; they’ve usually done the bulk of their growing by 6 months. He won’t stop completely, but I don't think your dog will get much taller now – he'll mostly just fill out and put on muscle. I'd say they finish growing by about 14 months at the latest, but the main spurt is over. ^^

Giant breeds definitely grow much more slowly, like St Bernards, Great Danes, and so on.

I’ve often had people say the same to me, though more about the 'wolf' part than the 'werewolf' bit ^^ at home, we’ve nicknamed him 'the cow'.

I also saw on a website that some large breeds can keep growing until they're two years old.

Thanks, I’ve noticed that some dogs grow quickly and then level off, whereas others grow more slowly and then have a sudden growth spurt later on.

Over the last few days, I’ve noticed his face is looking more "grown-up". So maybe he’ll be reaching his full size soon.

Yesterday, I heard a little boy say, "He looks like a werewolf!" ^^

I've got a Malinois and German Shepherd cross who takes after his mum so much that you’d easily take him for a pure Malinois, but ultimately you can't really compare them as he's a crossbreed and isn't Kennel Club registered. As an adult, he's 63 cm and weighs 74 lbs. What I remember—and this is definitely from the Malinois side, because my mum has had German Shepherds before and their growth was a bit slower—is that by 6 months, he’d already pretty much reached his adult height and then just filled out later. Most of the Malinois I've come across were usually smaller and leaner than mine; my vet told me it’s quite rare for a Malinois to go over 66 lbs. I imagine there's a weight limit in the breed standard, but either way, your dog was the same weight as mine at the same age. Just keep in mind they grow very fast, so you won't see him change much more from now on. He won't get much taller and might only put on a few more pounds, but that’s about it. They’re "large" breeds that grow quickly; I’m not sure if they’re the only large dogs like that.

Ah, right, I thought it was a Malinois.

I wonder if he’s had a Malinois before, anyway.

Ask him anyway, there's no harm in asking! :)

According to his profile, he’s got a German Shepherd!

Yeah, but I’d have to find their profile first. It’s a good idea, though!

You can send him a PM to ask him to have a look at your post.

    He’ll do it, I’m sure.

    He’s a good lad, is Wolf :)
