Hiking with a puppy – at what age can they start?

Hi everyone,

I've got a 4-month-old Malinois puppy.

I take him out for several walks a day, totalling about an hour to an hour and a half daily.

We love walking and hiking, and I know it's not recommended to take a puppy this young on long treks. So, in your opinion, when will our Malinois be old enough to join us for a hike? Even if it's just for a 2-3 hour trek.

Cheers!

It all depends on the type of terrain and the duration, and you’ve also got to make sure you take plenty of breaks... you can start with an hour on easy ground and build it up as they get older...

I’d say not until they’re at least a year old. Before that age, it’s just too long for a puppy.

I started taking my dogs for walks in the woods when they were 5 months old, and we began with 30-minute strolls to start with. It’s best to wait until they’re at least a year old before starting any proper long hikes, just to make sure they’re fully grown.

Personally, I have a Spaniel cross Border Collie who is nearly 3 months old. I’m planning on doing agility and cani-cross (so, hiking basically) with her, and I’m looking to start when she’s about a year or 18 months old. As for two-hour walks, I’d suggest waiting until they’re around 9 or 10 months, as too much walking before they’ve finished growing can cause serious damage... I’m no expert, though, so definitely wait for advice from people with more specialist knowledge than me ^^ Whoa, that’s way too much!! For a 4-month-old puppy, it should only be 20 minutes per walk. No more than that. Once a week, you might be able to manage 30 minutes to an hour, but no more than that and only once a week. There are charts available that show exercise times based on a dog's age. For hiking, it's 20 minutes at 4 months, 25 minutes at 5 months, and 35 minutes for 6 months plus. You should only move up to an hour once they're at least 12 months old. From 15 months onwards, you can do an hour or more. But not before then!!
