Hi everyone,

My girl has always been used to jumping up on the sofas and beds...

But for a while now, she just hasn't been able to do it anymore! I've also noticed that she's really struggling to get up the stairs and even a small step in the garden... When I tried to help her up by lifting her back end, she let out a yelp... Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks :)

Hi, my dog can't jump up on the sofa or the bed anymore. I noticed it because he’s started trembling. Usually, he jumps all over me in the morning, but for the last few days he’s just been wagging his tail. He’s a 12-year-old Maltese. He’s had problems with arthritis since birth.

Hi, I’m having the same issue with my girl. Everything was fine yesterday, but this afternoon I noticed something wasn't right when she came over to me. Usually, she just hops onto my bed by herself, but now she doesn't want to jump straight away. She waits for a bit, and then when she finally tries to jump, she collapses onto the bed as if her back legs are hurting. I’m really worried, thanks for any advice.

Hi everyone, it turns out my beagle has hip dysplasia despite his young age (a known issue for the breed). So, it’s two weeks of keeping him quiet and joint supplements for life now.

Hi, my 5-year-old shepherd cross has also been showing the same symptoms for 4 or 5 days now. We went to see the local vet who gave him an anti-inflammatory injection and some tablets; it settled him for a day and he seemed almost back to his normal self, but since last night he’s been in a lot of pain again and is breathing very quickly.

How is your dog doing? Did you ever get a diagnosis?

Hi there, My 4-year-old Beagle seems to be showing the same symptoms. I’m booking an appointment with the vet tomorrow, but with the lockdown, it’s going to take 2-3 days to be seen. How did things turn out for your girl, please?

    Hi,

I’d recommend taking her to see your vet, as it’s very likely that acute back pain is what's stopping your dog from jumping or climbing. If she’s walking normally but is suddenly reluctant to go up the stairs, it really points towards back pain, possibly caused by something like a slipped disc.

Arthritis is a long-term condition; it rarely comes on all of a sudden and doesn't usually cause such acute pain. It’s more of an "old dog" issue that develops gradually over time.

Your vet will be able to do an X-ray of her spine if they feel it’s necessary.

    Hope this helps,

    Karl

Maybe she’s got a sore back? The best thing would be to take her to the vet. My dog is 9 and doesn't have much arthritis yet, but there was one time when he couldn't jump anymore and it turned out to be back pain. Mind you, it could be her legs.

How old is your dog? Maybe arthritis? But it’s best to go and see a vet... She’s 6 years old, that’s exactly what a friend told me! Thanks for your reply!

How old is your dog? Could it be arthritis? It’s probably best to get them checked out by a vet, though...
