Female dog in season: changing behaviour around other dogs

Hi everyone,

My one-year-old girl is at the start of her very first season. She’s coping quite well with it, but as she’s my first female dog, I’ve got a few questions, especially regarding her behaviour...

Her behaviour hasn't really changed towards us, though she might be a bit more cuddly, but I get the impression she isn't acting the same way with her doggy friends. I've noticed her calming down over the last few weeks (there's a massive difference between now and three months ago), but since she's been in season, she seems completely uninterested in other dogs. Out on a walk today, we ran into two dogs she knows well and usually has a whale of a time with. Since I get on well with the owner, we decided to walk together for a bit. However, "madam" just kept to herself, sniffing about quietly, and didn't respond to the other two dogs trying to get her to play. They got the hint and went back to playing with each other. Later on, we stopped so I could chat with the owner. His two dogs were playing quite roughly, and Ushi, who was right at my feet, suddenly went over and barked at them as if to put them in their place and tell them to calm down. She’s absolutely never done anything like that before. A bit later, one of the dogs, who’s quite young and hasn’t quite mastered doggy etiquette yet, kept pestering her to play (almost harassing her), chasing after her. My girl, who usually loves playing with him, looked really uncomfortable (tail between her legs). Seeing she wasn't happy and that the other dog was being far too pushy, I called her back.

So, that was our walk. Nothing bad happened (far from it, she behaved very well), it’s just that she’s acting quite out of character. I’m wondering if it’s down to her being in season or if she’s just "growing up".

Thanks

Hi there, it’s true that female dogs definitely change their behaviour when they're in season. Generally, a ***** in heat becomes more affectionate and less timid. Do be careful when you take her out, as she'll attract entire males and you could end up with an unwanted litter. Even if she refuses to mate during the first stage of her season, she'll be receptive during the second stage once ovulation occurs. Hope this helps, Mazarine
