Dry food recommendations for my Australian Shepherd?

Hi everyone,

First of all, sorry if this topic has already been covered loads of times, but I can't find the answers to my questions (or maybe I’m just rubbish at searching).

I have an 8-month-old Australian Shepherd that I'm currently feeding the same dry food he had at the breeder's (Royal Canin Puppy Medium), but I’ve noticed he’s turning his nose up at it more and more, and he’s getting a bit bloated. I’d like to switch his food to something higher quality (grain-free + high meat content?), but I’m finding it really tough to make a choice, so I’d appreciate some help/advice.

The brands that look alright to me are Carnilove, Orijen, and Wolfood. I was thinking of going with one of those, but I must admit I’m a bit lost because there are just so many ranges... and I don’t know which one to pick.

I asked my vet for advice, and they recommended Royal Canin and Hill's Prescription Diet, which are packed with grains, so I didn't bother with that.

Thanks in advance for your help 😌

Evening all! When it comes to kibble, I’ve heard plenty of good things about certain premium brands, but there’s been more and more criticism of Orijen lately (specifically regarding some tall stories about their meat quality, and the fact that... well, shipping dry food over a thousand miles when you can find quality stuff closer to home is a bit of a shame). The home-cooked diet suggested by @Aiken-Ka is a great shout, but you really need the time and the motivation, and you’ll probably need a bit of help working out the portions. It’s also worth noting you’ve got the option of freeze-dried food! I’ve tried and tested a couple of brands myself—one that includes rice or potato and a grain-free version—and they certainly got my seal of approval, for what it’s worth. Mind you, I’m well aware they aren't exactly cheap. A lot of people don’t realise it, but you can also do mixed feeding—giving dry food in the morning and a home-cooked meal in the evening if you haven't got the time to do it for every meal!

What about a home-cooked diet? Dry food isn't necessarily the best when it comes to nutrition (just my personal opinion).

Carnilove is a good brand, but the pea content can cause issues for some dogs, so you’ll need to do a slow transition.

My dog actually digests Ownat Just Grain Free better out of the grain-free range.
