What are the laws regarding Staffie-crosses?

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum. I’m looking for some information about a dog we’ve just taken in.

I’m currently living with my brother and someone gave him a Labrador Staffie-cross puppy. I saw a news report today (about a tragic incident where an 18-month-old child was killed by a family dog) which mentioned that it’s illegal to sell or give away Staffie-crosses, and therefore illegal to take one in. There wasn't any more info in the article, so I was wondering if anyone here could tell me a bit more about the rules?

Thanks a lot to anyone who can help.

Hi, is it legal to sell a Border Collie cross Staffy puppy? If so, how much do they usually go for? Thanks.

I’ve posted the links so she can understand, and I’ve given a quick explanation for now. Anyway, it’s got nothing to do with the new law – it was already a total shambles before then.

Stop saying that a Staffy cross is automatically a Pit Bull! There's a risk, but it's not a certainty! Once the dog is about 10 months old, it'll have to have a breed assessment. If that's positive, the dog will be classed as a banned type; otherwise, it’ll just be a Labrador-type cross! But if it’s a Staffy-Lab cross, there’s a good chance its height will be outside the legal measurements anyway. Anyway, one thing’s for sure, the new rules are a load of rubbish—we're going to see an influx of crosses and non-pedigrees... and Pit Bulls are becoming trendy again. It’s so sad for these dogs!

So, your dog is what’s considered a banned breed type—a Pit Bull. You can, of course, keep him, but there are quite a few legal steps you'll need to take to make sure everything is above board and to get a certificate of exemption:

These links should be quite useful for you:

You’ll need to head to the vet for his vaccinations anyway, so use that as an opportunity to ask them for some more advice on the process.
