2-month-old puppy - leg issue

Hi everyone,

So, here's the situation: I've just adopted a 2-month-old male Amstaff from a breeder. He's being fed Royal Canin Puppy food, and since yesterday I've noticed his front right leg is positioned weirdly; it looks twisted when he's sitting or standing still (I'll try to upload a photo). I've contacted the breeder who tells me it must be something to do with the dosage of his dry food—either too much or too little calcium—and that his leg will go back to normal once his diet is adjusted. I've tried calling my vet but they don't have any appointments available until 2nd January (I live right out in the sticks). He doesn't seem to be in any pain, he's playing as usual and eating well, but I'm still really worried.

Any advice?

Hi, I’m having the same issue with my 3-month-old Rottie puppy. I’ve been to see my vet, and they gave me some dietary supplements (growth and mineral ones called Pet Phos and Caniplasine). I just wanted to know if things have improved with your little ones? He’s only been taking them for 3 days now.

Hi there, I’m bumping this thread as there’s a recent post covering a similar sort of issue. I’m not sure if it’s exactly the same, but it might be worth comparing them! 🙄

Hi natoch, I’m having the same problem as you with my 6-month-old puppy. Would it be possible to tell me which supplement your vet gave you, please? I’ve been to five different vets now and they haven’t given me anything except putting him on a diet, and I’m really worried. It would be so kind of you to let me know. Thanks in advance.

    That's great news...

It's good that you acted so quickly, the little one will grow up without any lasting effects.

Problem solved! Calcium deficiency, vitamins etc. The vet gave some supplements and within a few days his leg is back to normal.

Calcium deficiency or excess (I made a mistake in the text)

No, it isn’t always like that. When he’s walking, you can’t see a thing—his leg is perfectly straight and he doesn’t have any trouble walking; he isn't limping. It’s only when he sits down or stands still for too long. Sometimes it doesn’t look as "bowed" as that, and other times he just doesn't seem to place it properly. I’ve called the breeder back, they’ve seen it, and I called the vet straight after (I should mention it’s my own vet, not the breeder’s... poor guy, I must be driving him mad). Both of them think it could be down to a deficiency or, alternatively, a calcium imbalance. It’s a reputable and well-known breeder, so I’m not blaming them at all... especially as Oslo only arrived a week ago and we’ve only noticed the problem in the last two days; everything was fine before that. It’s certainly not stopping him from enjoying life—he’s playing, going for walks, eating, sleeping, and causing absolute chaos everywhere he goes; he’s a proper little live wire. I don’t really know what to think anymore. I’m going to call the vet again tomorrow and push for an earlier appointment—I won’t take no for an answer. I’ll keep you all updated on how it goes. Thanks for the reply.

Is it always like that? Could it just be the way he’s standing? Is the bone actually crooked? I’m no expert on dog skeletons ^^ but if the bone is growing wonky, that’s definitely not right. Could it be an accident the breeder hid from you? Anyway, I’d say for now, try not to let him put too much strain on that leg. Keep us posted! ^^

I'll post another photo for you, from the front. As for the dry food, the breeder had her on this brand, so I’m a bit wary of changing it. My female Amstaff has always been on RC and I’ve never noticed any issues until now, but every dog is different after all – thanks for the advice, though. I’m really anxious to get her to the vet.
