2-month-old puppy - leg issue

Hi everyone,

So, here's the situation: I've just adopted a 2-month-old male Amstaff from a breeder. He's being fed Royal Canin Puppy food, and since yesterday I've noticed his front right leg is positioned weirdly; it looks twisted when he's sitting or standing still (I'll try to upload a photo). I've contacted the breeder who tells me it must be something to do with the dosage of his dry food—either too much or too little calcium—and that his leg will go back to normal once his diet is adjusted. I've tried calling my vet but they don't have any appointments available until 2nd January (I live right out in the sticks). He doesn't seem to be in any pain, he's playing as usual and eating well, but I'm still really worried.

Any advice?

Hi there, I know this is an old thread, but I’m having the exact same issue with Vox, my two-month-old AmStaff puppy. I’m not due to see the vet for another month – can it wait until then, or should I give them a ring to get an earlier appointment?

You really shouldn't give calcium supplements off your own back, as excess calcium can cause serious health issues (and will definitely make arthritis worse in their senior years).

It’s something you definitely need to have a proper chat with the vet about.

There are plenty of calcium-rich foods you can use instead (avoiding anything with cow’s milk, as we all know) – have a look for advice on some BARF websites, for example.

Problem sorted! Calcium deficiency, vitamins, etc. The vet gave him some supplements and within a few days his leg is back to normal.

Could I ask what you gave him, please?

Hi, I hope you see my message. I’ve just seen your old post about your dog. I was wondering how things turned out in the end and which vitamins and supplements you gave him? My son has just bought a 2-month-old Staffie who’s having the exact same problems as yours did. We’re really worried and feeling a bit lost. We’ve been to the vet and picked up some vitamins and supplements, and we’ve changed his dry food too, as he was on the same brand you were using back then. I really hope you can get back to me. Thanks very much

Hi, I realise this post is from 2018😅 but I’ve been searching online and I see your dog had the same issue mine is having at the moment. Could you let me know if you remember the name of the product you gave him (the supplement)? Thanks so much!!

Hi, I’m having the same issue with my young German Wirehaired Pointer puppy, he's only 2 months old. The vet recommended changing his food, which I’ve already done. My question is, how long did it take for your dog’s leg to go back to normal? Thanks for any replies, I’m really worried about him.

Hi there, What did the breeder say to you? What did they say it was? Didn’t he come with a health certificate? With an issue like that, I’d head straight to the vet to get their advice directly, just to be on the safe side.

    Hi everyone,

I’ve had a little Shar Pei puppy for two days now and one of his front legs is twisted (it’s starting on the other front leg too). He’s playing away fine but it’s getting worse right before my eyes. I’m quite worried because his sister from the same litter has the same issue, so I’m afraid it’s a hereditary problem.

Could you please let me know the names of any supplements and tell me how long it took to clear up if they worked for your dogs?

    Many thanks

Hi, I’m having the same issue with my 3-month-old Rottweiler puppy. I’ve been to the vet and they’ve given me some supplements. I was just wondering if your little ones have fully recovered? Thanks.
