Lump on my cat's head

We've discovered that my cat has a lump on one side of her head, just in front of her ear.

We're really worried because she's quite old now, but her behaviour hasn't changed at all. The lump doesn't seem to be causing her any pain; she doesn't react when we touch it. It just seems to be itchy.

I'm hoping it's just a simple bump or a sting, but the lump is relatively large...

If anyone could shed some light on this, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks

Hi there, Mine has a lump behind her eye, on what would be the cheekbone. It’s the size of a plum! On the X-ray, it turned out to be bone rather than cancer. We made the decision to just leave it alone. 18 months on, the only effects are very localised. It’s a bit itchy, which makes her more and more cuddly because she wants me to take her head in both hands and gently massage the bump. Fingers crossed she carries on living a happy life, and I’m so glad my vet didn’t suggest any barbaric methods. Thierry

Hi everyone! I’m finally updating this post a few years on: it turns out my cat had an abscess. She had surgery and everything went really well. Just as a little side note, apparently an abscess in that spot means she stood her ground against her opponent; otherwise, it would have been on her tail! :) I’d definitely recommend seeing a vet either way, as it could have been something else, potentially much more serious.

Yeah, definitely! Thanks so much anyway. What worries me is that the lump is about the size of a £2 coin, so quite big and raised. Plus, she isn't in any pain. So we're wondering if it could still be a sting... Thanks again!

Hi, I’m posting a year later but my cat has exactly the same thing in the same spot; he’s going to see the vet tomorrow. The lump is getting bigger but he isn’t in any pain and there’s no sign of a sting or anything. He’d actually been to see the vet the day before the lump appeared because he was a bit off colour, which the vet said was just due to the heat. I wanted to check, just to put my mind at ease, what happened with your girl and if it was anything serious...

It might turn out to be nothing, but I’d always rather suggest getting it checked than just telling you not to worry...

I’m not a vet, so I can’t really assess the situation. I’m just telling you how I’d react now that I’ve seen my own cat in pain from a lump I thought was harmless...

I really hope it’s nothing, but if it is a tick, only the vet will be able to treat it properly and ease the pain.

    Alright, thank you so much.

I hope it’s something like that and nothing too serious...

What worries me is that there isn't a wound or even a little red mark, like you’d expect from an insect bite. I’m seeing the vet tomorrow, so we’ll see how it goes...

You should see a vet, just in case...

One of my cats had a lump like that and it turned out to be an infected tick bite. He'd pulled the tick off himself but left the head behind under the skin, and it got infected.
