I think my cat Gino swallowed two foam earplugs this morning, can anyone reassure me?

Hello,

I think my Gino managed to swallow two foam earplugs this morning. He still seems his usual self and I don't think there's a need to panic, but could anyone put my mind at rest?

Thanks.

Contrary to what the others think, I reckon this is actually quite serious. Just look at the effort a cat has to make sometimes just to cough up a hairball; so two earplugs, which aren't digestible and can't be "broken down" (if that’s even the right word), are a real concern. I think you should give them a course of liquid paraffin, which you can get in any pharmacy for about £4 or £5. Using a syringe without the needle, give them roughly 4ml twice a day for three days—it doesn't have to be precise to the last drop. It’ll lubricate or "oil up" the tract, so to speak, and allow the two earplugs to pass through easily. If you need any more help, don't hesitate to ask!

Keep a very close eye on things...

Keep us posted if you can :)

I’ve looked everywhere, hoovered under the bed, moved everything around... nothing. I don’t think the foam expands; it isn’t designed to do that.

    Thanks for your comments.

Yes, definitely keep a close eye on things though. You don't want those earplugs swelling up in the stomach!!! If there's any change in behaviour—eating less, drinking less, a bloated stomach, etc.—it's straight to the vet!! Mind you, the earplugs could just be under a piece of furniture, under the bed, and so on... Laurence and her Noah’s Ark

Normally, he should just pass them naturally.

However, if you notice even the slightest change in his habits, or if he seems at all lethargic, get him to the vet straight away.
