My cat Romy was spayed and since then she's almost completely lost her voice; she's barely meowing and sounds really unusual when she does. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Hi there,

I had a similar experience: I had my girl spayed last March and when I went to pick her up, while we were still at the vet's, her voice sounded quite unusual. Even her purr wasn't like it normally is (she sounded a bit hoarse).

The vet told me it was because of the intubation.

Anyway, it did ease off over time but it never completely went away. If there was a slight lesion on the vocal cords and it's scarred over, it can cause that little rasp in the voice. That’s the explanation I was given later on, at least.

Pixie is doing fine and it doesn't seem to bother her.

She was spayed on the 10th of October, and I also think her vocal cords might have been irritated by the intubation.

Do you think her voice will come back, or should I give the vet a call?

    Thanks

Hi there, When was the neutering done? During some surgeries, cats are intubated, and this can irritate their vocal cords. As Blue Cat mentioned, it could also be due to pain. In that case, give your vet a call to adjust their pain relief. Kind regards, Eloïse

Hi there, Spaying doesn't have any impact on a cat's voice. It’s possible she’s still a bit sore after the op, which is why her meow sounds so weak. Your vet can prescribe some cat-safe painkillers (never give her paracetamol!). Otherwise, there might be an issue with her throat, in which case you'll need to get her checked out for a proper diagnosis.
