Help needed: my cat keeps scratching the bedroom floor, how can I stop him?

Hi everyone,

I can't even remember when it started... but my cat has been scratching the bedroom floor for several months now.

It's always in one specific spot, on just one side of the bed. At first, I kept checking to see if he'd had an accident (that's what came up when I searched online). I've no idea why he's doing it...

But we're at our wits' end now: the bedroom has wooden floorboards that echo, and the sound of his claws on them is just unbearable. He always scratches the floor early in the morning, between 6am and 8am. He wakes us up at the weekend with this piercing noise; it's awful...

We don't want to shut the bedroom door because we've got three cats who are used to sleeping with us. If we lock him in another room, we reckon he'll just scratch at the door all night...

We've also tried putting rugs down where he scratches, but the clever clogs just moves further along to make sure he's on the floor...

We've tried ignoring him, telling him 'No!', and even using a water spray bottle every time... but nothing works!

Thanks for any advice!!!

Hi, do you have fleas in your floorboards? Does he have some sturdy scratching posts to have a good scratch? Some cats particularly love sharpening their claws on wood. Could you give him a wooden board, or even a log or a large branch found outdoors?

    Hi there,

Scratching is an instinctive behaviour for cats. Does your cat have a scratching post, a cat tree, or something similar they can use? If you don’t have one, putting a cat tree in your home might encourage your cat to use that instead of your floor.

The fact that they are scratching early in the morning is likely because cats are naturally very active at dawn.

Excessive scratching can also be caused by being weaned too early. If this is the case, you could try ensuring your cat has plenty of access to the outdoors whenever they like and/or regular contact with other cats.

    Hope this helps,

    Jeanne
