GROWLING CAT

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently noticed that my cat has started growling whenever she hears the doorbell. I’m quite surprised because I know dogs growl, but I didn’t think cats could too.

For instance, if we’re sitting on the sofa or she’s fast asleep in her bed and the postie rings, she gets up straight away and starts growling.

I know I’ve always wanted a dog and I’ve basically raised my cat to behave like one, but I didn’t think she'd go as far as growling!

I thought I’d seen everything after 8 years, but these fur babies always find a way to surprise us :)

Does anyone else have a cat like this? If there’s a vet reading this who could explain it, I’d love to hear from you.

My cat also spends all his time growling: when you move his food bowl while he’s eating, when he’s settled nicely on your lap and you dare to move, when you go near him when he wants to be left alone, or when any other cat comes near... Mind you, he’s never been mistreated, he’s just a right old grump.

He sounds like a bit of a diva!

Thanks for your replies!! Maybe it’s stress, but knowing her as well as I do and especially with all her meowing, I wouldn't have said it was fear – more like she was just annoyed! Mind you, luckily the doorbell doesn't ring every day at mine!!!

My two rescue cats make themselves scarce at the slightest suspicious noise, but on the other hand, my Wegie comes galloping over to see what’s going on—she loves being stroked by strangers.

Mine is exactly the same and a proper little busybody; she’s always behind the door when I get home and spends her whole day people-watching from the balcony. I definitely think Norwegian Forest cats are just very inquisitive!!

    Hi everyone,

My Siamese growls every single time there’s noise in the communal hallway of our building. The first time it happened, I was absolutely stunned because her growl was so impressive. I think she’s convinced she has to 'guard' the flat against any intruders in her personal kingdom...

    Hi there.

Your kitty is quite simply completely stressed out.

The sound of the doorbell or a certain scent is enough to trigger a huge amount of stress.

You should put up a “Beware of the guard cat” sign! 😁

In all seriousness though, she’s probably associated the doorbell with something unpleasant, like a stranger coming into the house...

I see she’s not the only one then, as among the people I know, mine is the only one that growls. I’m not sure if it’s down to fear; I reckon, like @Norpenna, that she’s guarding the house. She’s only really scared of the hoover, and when she sees that she bolts and hides, whereas here, she doesn’t just growl, she actually goes right up to the door—so yeah, definitely more of a little guard cat lol. To everyone who says cats aren't like dogs: sure, but they can certainly have similar behaviours! :)

Hi there, It’s strange, my girl growls as well – at any suspicious noise, or if she spots a strange cat in the garden at night... but the two boys don’t! Do you think female cats are just more protective?
