Worrying growth curve

Hi everyone!

I’m posting here to have a chat and get your thoughts on my Maine Coon’s weight.

So, Oliver was born on 24th December 2018, making him 4 months and a week old. We got him from a breeder and he’s a registered pedigree.

Everything is going great; he’s a brilliant cat and absolutely gorgeous.

However, I feel like he’s lagging behind other cats of his breed because he only weighs about 5.3 lbs (2.4 kg) at 4 months and a week old...

When I browse through various forums, it seems like the norm for a male is closer to 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg)... I haven’t seen any other cats under 6.6 lbs (3 kg) at this stage...

I should note that he’s got a very healthy appetite!

What do you reckon?

I’m a massive Maine Coon fan; I’ve got six of them and they’re absolutely lovely and so affectionate.

Hi, there’s no need to worry at this stage; that’s a perfectly respectable weight for their age. Some Maine Coons have a bigger growth spurt around the one-year mark, whereas those that put on a lot of weight in the first six months tend to slow down after that. Just keep in mind that a Maine Coon keeps growing until they’re five, and growth charts aren’t an exact science.

Hi, I’m just getting back to you a year later... How is your little lad doing? How much does he weigh? We’ve just adopted a male Maine Coon and when he arrived he weighed 2.4 lbs (1.1 kg) at 2 months and 3 weeks old. He’ll be 4 months old in 7 days and weighs 4.4 lbs (2 kg). Hope to hear back from you. Hi, would it be possible to get an update after all these years, please? I’m in the same boat as you.

    Good evening,

I have a six-month-old Maine Coon called Taj. He’s an absolute sweetheart... (except at 5 am... 🤪).

I got him when he was three months old and he weighed just 4.2 lbs. He was the runt of the litter and weighed about 2.2 lbs less than the others. Now, at six months, he weighs 13.2 lbs and is doing great. (Mind you, he did have an eye ulcer when he was four months old... feline herpes...) so we have to keep a close eye on him. Taj brings us so much joy every day. He’s really catching up with his weight and I think every cat is different when it comes to their growth. The main thing is to love them and they certainly give it back in spades 😍

    Have a lovely evening everyone

    Hi there,

I agree. You really need to look at the quality of the food, cut down on carbs, and leave food out so the cat can self-regulate. Paradoxically, cats on restricted portions often end up putting on more weight because their brain tells them they need to ‘stock up’.

Also, just like with humans, weight on its own isn’t enough to decide if a cat is overweight. It’s possible this girl is just big-boned like her mum and is genetically programmed to be heavy without actually being obese.

13 lbs is normal for a male, but your female definitely seems to be over a healthy weight. Neutering can lead to weight gain if their diet isn't suitable (poor quality dry food with too much sugar), or if their food intake is restricted (cats shouldn't really have scheduled mealtimes; they should be left to self-regulate).

Hi everyone, my 1-year-old female Maine Coon, Plume, weighs 7.5kg (about 16.5 lbs). I'm worried this is quite a lot as the growth charts for females say they should be 5.2kg (around 11.5 lbs) max. Could anyone give me some advice, please? I should mention that I also have a male called Bandit who is longer and taller at 11 months old, but he weighs 6kg (roughly 13 lbs). They have the same dad but different mums, and both have been spayed and neutered.
