Thin Maine Coon

Hi everyone,

I have two Maine Coons: a 14-month-old female and a 13-month-old male. The female is quite sturdy and weighs about 14 lbs (1 stone); she's been spayed since she was 5 months old. My male only weighs about 12 lbs, and when I stroke him, I can really feel his bones. He hasn't been neutered yet. They both eat Royal Canin Maine Coon kitten dry food (recommended until they're at least 18 months old).

They are both pedigree cats with papers and the parents were health-tested. I also do their worming treatments every 3 months and they are, of course, up to date with all their vaccinations. Behaviour-wise, they're both full of energy. However, I'm worried about how thin my male is (as he should normally be bigger than the female). Some people have told me that being neutered doesn't affect weight during growth.

At the moment, I'm trying to reassure myself that he's just going through a lanky phase, but his weight has plateaued for nearly 2 months now.

Can anyone reassure me or give me some advice if you've been in a similar situation with your cat?

Thanks in advance, everyone.

Hi, I’ve just come across your post from four years ago. I was wondering how your boy’s growth progressed after he hit 13 months. My cat is in much the same boat; he turned one at the end of March 2021, but his weight has plateaued since February, even though he should still be growing. He’s also quite lanky but very tall and isn’t a big eater at all. I actually feel like he’s not eating enough. Did yours eventually fill out a bit, so to speak?

I’ve been in touch with my breeder and she’s really put my mind at ease, saying that my boy is an average weight. He’s just stretching out at the moment. She says it’s actually my girl who’s a bit on the chunky side. It’s true, she’s a right little greedy guts! Best wishes to everyone.

Thank you so much already for your two replies. To answer @Teemteem, my boy is roughly the same length as the female. My girl is a bit on the chubby side (she’s got a little tummy) but my boy is really skinny. He hasn't put on any weight for two months now. Mind you, they aren't from the same breeder and don't share any parents. To answer @Princesse et moi pour toujours, I didn't have much choice regarding getting my girl spayed. The breeder was adamant it had to be done before she was 6 months old (some even do it at 3 months, which is awful). I held off as long as I could because I’m really against early neutering, especially for slow-maturing breeds like Maine Coons and also for my British Shorthairs (my girl was spayed at 15 months because her calling was upsetting my whole little cat gang). My boy’s breeders are much more relaxed about it; they just ask that he isn't used for breeding and recommend neutering at around 2 years old. There’s a good relationship of trust there.

I’m open to any advice you might have. Thanks.

You shouldn't have them neutered so young—only after four years, once they’ve finished growing, which takes a particularly long time for Maine Coons.

    Hi there,

It all depends on your male's build: is he longer and bigger than the female, who is a month older?

Breed standards vary, so it’s better to look at a range of norms based on the individual cat's frame. His weight progression is what really matters—specifically, how much he’s put on since he was 6 months old and his monthly gain. A raw weight figure at a single point in time, without any context, won’t give you an accurate picture.

That being said, according to the usual standards:

When a kitten reaches 3 months old, a female weighs 3.3 to 5.5 lbs on average, and a male weighs between 4.4 and 6.6 lbs. By the time they are a year old, a male weighs around 13 to 15 lbs, while a female Maine Coon is usually between 9 and 11 lbs.

A Maine Coon kitten keeps growing until they are 4 years old, reaching an average adult weight of 11 to 13 lbs for a female and 17 to 22 lbs (roughly 1 stone 4 lbs to 1 stone 8 lbs) for a male.

Maine Coon kittens grow in length until they are two years old, then they fill out and gain muscle mass for another year or two. Their growth period is very intense and lasts a long time.

Hi again, Could you also give me some advice on what the ideal weight for my cat should be at 13 months old? Thanks.
