Semi-long or short coat?

Hi everyone!

I've been the happy owner of this cute Maine Coon kitten (fully registered pedigree) since the start of March, but I've got a few questions about his coat.

The sire and dam are, of course, 100% purebred and registered.

He was part of a planned litter of 6 kittens (long-haired cream/red and brown/black silver), but only the two red males have a shorter coat than the others. I should mention that the breeder took every precaution with this litter.

Here are a few photos from when he was 2 months old to 3 and a half months old.

I'd love to get your opinion! :)

Lyzzzai Lol yes, you could say that! I’ve got him used to being brushed now and I’ve managed to get quite a bit of fur off him. It’s funny, I don’t remember that being a thing with my moggy ^^

Hi Folior Yes, his tail is definitely looking better, and in the first photo, he’s keeping an eye on it and watching it grow... 👌 He’s a gorgeous baby anyway, I can't wait to see him again once he’s out of his nappies.

It’s hard to really tell from a photo, and I don’t see much of a difference myself, but as you’re the one brushing him, you’ll be the one to notice the progress. Just be patient and try not to fixate on his coat length; it’ll come, but likely in the autumn – I doubt it’ll grow much before then. Mind you, even if he hasn’t got much of a coat yet, he’s certainly got some massive ears!

    Hi fellow Maine Coon lovers,

Here’s how his coat is coming along a week later! I don’t think his head and chest area are quite there yet, but it feels like his fur is getting longer over the rest of his body towards the back... What do you think? :)

Yes :) thanks for your replies, I'll keep you posted on how he’s getting on. Nearly 4 months old and already 5.5 lbs, his weight is still about right for a Maine Coon.

Yes, he’s definitely got those thick Maine Coon jowls, though his cheeks are still a bit on the thin side. He’ll fill out, the big lad. It’s true that there’s just something about gingers, he’s absolutely gorgeous 👌

I agree, I think his muzzle has definitely filled out and he's looking a bit more mature. You've just got to give it time; some of them change so much.

Here are some photos from today.

His tail is starting to fill out.

And his head is a bit square... I've seen this before with some Maine Coons and it'll develop over time. I've got photos of the parents if anyone needs them.

Hi Yikoi, Thanks for your reply and I'm definitely interested in joining the group, so why not? :) I’ve also noticed that his face isn't particularly 'Maine Coon-looking' compared to his brothers and sisters. It’s much less boxy, but I can see it filling out as he grows up. It seems to me that most ginger cats take a bit longer to mature physically. That’s what I’ve gathered from comparing lots of photos on social media, anyway. I got him from a private seller; they seemed like a lovely family with only Maine Coons and pedigree dogs. I was given all the necessary paperwork and they answered all my questions.
