My 15-month-old male Maine Coon only weighs 12.5 lbs (5.7kg) – is this normal?

Hi everyone,

I’m posting today because I’m a bit worried about my Maine Coon’s weight; he really seems to be on the smaller side. He’s a male, neutered at six months, and is now one year and three months old but only weighs about 12.5 lbs (5.7kg). 😐

Granted, his parents were small-built too, but at 15 months old, I feel his weight is really low, especially for a male. He’s fed on Virbac HPM premium dry food, with the occasional bit of wet food (though he isn’t really bothered by it and eats very little). I’ve been measuring his daily portions and he eats between 60 and 70 grams of dry food on average.

Our last visit to the vet went very well and he considers him to be at his "ideal weight". It’s true that he doesn’t look skinny, but he isn’t putting on any weight either. His weight already started to plateau around the 8-month mark at about 11.7 lbs (5.3kg). I should add that his stools are firm (actually, he hasn’t had any digestive issues or scratching since being on Virbac HPM) and he’s very regular every day.

Anyway, he's my first Maine Coon, so what do those of you with more experience think? When I look on forums, I see plenty of one-year-old males that are already 17 or 18 lbs (around 8kg)! Mine is nowhere near that...

Thanks for any advice you can share.

Hi there, I’m adopting my first Maine Coon kitten on 19 June, and I also have a question regarding his weight. He’s 6 weeks old today—roughly how much should he weigh? The breeder told me he weighs 400g (about 0.9 lbs). Did she make a mistake, or is it actually possible for him to be that weight? Many thanks! 😊

Hi there, Maine Coons keep growing until they are about 2 years old, so he could still put on some weight between now and then. However, if both his parents were on the smaller side, he’s likely just inherited their build. Your cat’s weight isn't unusual for a Maine Coon either; he’s simply at the lower end of the scale. Getting him neutered at 6 months might have also slowed his growth down a little. Either way, don’t worry—there are probably more Maine Coons weighing around 13 lbs than there are 22 lbs giants. I wouldn't try to make him "bulk up", as you’ll risk ending up with an overweight cat before you know it. I hope this helps. Have a lovely day, Lucie

Hi there, Nothing to worry about. A male MC can weigh anywhere from 9lbs to 20lbs, or even up to 26lbs for the really big ones, depending on his genetics. Plus, at 15 months old, he’s still got some growing to do until he’s about 2 years old.
