Mirabelle the MAINE COON: her first season is a right nightmare!!!

Meet Mirabelle,

Hello, or rather good evening – it’s late and this is my second night without sleeping a wink! The little one is eight months old, and for the last two days she’s been rolling around on the floor, meowing and chirruping. Honestly, she’s making a right racket! I’m worried about the neighbours during the night, and I haven’t slept for two nights now!!!

She was a gift and she hasn’t even seen a vet yet; I was waiting to get her spayed, and now her first season has arrived out of the blue!!!

I went to the chemist to see if there was anything I could give her, but no luck. So I’m wondering, how many days is this going to last????

Anyway, as soon as Mirabelle’s season is over, it’s straight to the vet to get her spayed!!!

Please let me know what you think, as I’m worried it might last a week or even longer!

Mirabelle and her owner (who is very sleepy!)

My parents' cat is currently dying from cancer caused by the pill. She’s 10 years old and has been on it her whole life.

I remember my first cat: I was in my early twenties... oops, that was donkey's years ago now... lol. We'd taken in a little girl called Moumoune, she was about two or three years old and we'd found her wandering as a stray. I'd booked an appointment with the vet, at a clinic all the way on the other side of Paris, to get her spayed on a Saturday... One evening (eight days before), as I was coming home from work, I heard these bizarre noises, these guttural sounds... in the stairwell. We lived on the 6th floor, and the higher I climbed, the more the yowling intensified... by the time I reached my door, it was horrific... it was my Moumoune, she was in heat... We spent the nights trying to keep her under the blankets... The next day, the vet reassured me, saying he could still do the op at the end of the week. I can't even tell you what the neighbours must have had to endure for a whole week... lmao

I know my vets are completely against the pill and I reckon they probably don't even sell it.

    I’ll ask them about it.

Well, exactly... but vets sell it... they aren't bothered... when the kitty gets poorly, it’s just more money in their pockets.

Because the feline contraceptive pill is absolute crap and should be taken off the market; it’s responsible for so many cases of mammary tumours.

What’s more, the pill causes metritis and pyometra, which are life-threatening for female cats.

Metritis = infection of the uterus.

Quick question – why is the pill never recommended?

Never give her the pill. Oh, those sleepless nights when a female cat hasn't been spayed yet lol – I’ve been there, just like every other member here with a girl I reckon lol. Be really careful that she doesn’t manage to slip out; I’m not sure if you’re in a house, but you also need to make sure no toms get in, as her calling will definitely attract them. Hang in there, once she’s been spayed everything will get back to normal.

Whatever you do, definitely DO NOT give her the pill, not even once! Hang in there, her heat should be over soon. First heats usually don't last long at all. It’s very likely it won't last more than 4 days. In fact, by the time you read this, she'll probably be finished calling or very nearly there. I’ve noticed that, as a rule, a young cat’s first heat usually only lasts about 2 or 3 days. Be patient! Soon your girl will be spayed and you’ll be able to sleep soundly again—and so will your neighbours! ;)

Hang in there... you're only at the beginning of it...

A female cat being in heat usually lasts between four and ten days.

Go and see your vet; they'll be able to let you know what can be done.
