Hi everyone, I'm picking up my Maine Coon next month. I made a post a while back to ask which brand to choose and I'd settled on Purizon for dry food, but I've seen there's been a massive scandal on Facebook with loads and loads of sick cats linked to Purizon. It's been mentioned by breeders too, including the one I'm getting my MC from.

Royal Canin Kitten

Pro Plan Original Kitten

Concept for Life Kitten

Maine Coon Kitten specific food

Which brand do you think I should go for? Or if you have any recommendations for dry food with better reviews, please let me know. Thanks!

    Hi there,

My 3-month-old kitten is on Royal Canin Kitten Second Age dry food and Royal Canin wet food pouches in gravy. Every now and then, I also give him a bit of minced beef and he absolutely loves it. It suits him perfectly.

I tried feeding my previous cat grain-free Feringa wet food, but she never wanted it (and she refused dry food too). Like Kalou, I trust my vet.

For the wet food, I’ve gone for Feringa and Animonda grain-free for mixed feeding, but I also wanted to go grain-free for the dry food. There was a big scandal with Purizon so I’d rather avoid them—what grain-free kibble would you recommend that’s suitable for a Maine Coon?

Dry food like Royal Canin and Pro Plan should be avoided… cats are obligate carnivores, so if you can afford to give them wet food, it’s much better for them to help prevent urinary stones and other illnesses later on.

Otherwise, go for grain-free, alternating it with wet food and raw meat (make sure they’re on an empty stomach before giving it to them).

I’d recommend looking into high-quality grain-free brands that have a really good nutritional profile.

Grain-free kibble is definitely the way to go; cereals in the long run are really not great and will only end up damaging your cat’s health (and sometimes you don’t see it coming), so I’ll say it again: if you can afford it, go for the best!

And don’t hesitate to check reviews online; do as much research as you can :)
